Denver Sweeps Fourth-Straight Summit League Championship

Summit League Championships Final Results

INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving programs earned 15 NCAA B Standards and set four new Summit League Championship records en route to both programs' fourth-straight Summit League Championships on Saturday night at IUPUI Natatorium.

Denver ended the weekend with 16 new Summit League Championship records and seven new school records. The Pioneers won all 34 swimming events this weekend. This weekend also marked Denver's first time in its four years in the league that the Pioneers' won all 34 swimming events.

This year marked the first year of the 100 IM at the Summit League Championships, an event that saw sophomore Bailey Andison (Smiths Falls, Ontario) open the night with a 54.41 in her victory. Freshman Kylie Cronin (Marblehead, Mass.) also reached the podium in the event, taking third with a 58.20. Senior Ben Severino (Des Moines, Iowa) out-touched his opponents with a time of 50.28 in the men's race.

In the Saturday distance race, junior Maddie Myers (Arvada, Colo.) earned an NCAA B Standard with a time of 16:28.76 in the 1650 free. Junior Karly Haraden (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) reached the wall in third, clocking in at 16:49.57.

Senior Scott Bergstrom (White Salmon, Wash.) and freshman Warren Sexson (Mahtomedi, Minn.) both achieved NCAA B Standards in the men's distance race. Bergstrom earned the victory with a time of 15:16.99, while Sexson touched third in 15:29.45.

Junior Morgan McCormick (Golden, Colo.) earned a qualifying standard of her own in the 200 back, taking the gold with a time of 1:54.43. Senior Clara Jenck (Phoenix, Ariz.) reached the wall in third with the time of 2:00.28.

Denver's men recorded the Pioneers' first podium sweep of the evening in the men's 200 back. Junior Anton Loncar (Hillsboro, Ore.) led the DU trio with a NCAA B Standard, 0.02 seconds off his Summit League Championships record, touching in 1:41.41. Junior Jared Smith (Boulder City, Nev.) finished with an NCAA qualifying time of his own in 1:43.83, while freshman Neil Wachtler (Waco, Texas) closed out the podium finishes with a time of 1:48.94.

Senior Johanna Roas (Munich, Germany) finished the 100 free, 0.05 seconds off her own championship record, winning the race with an NCAA B time of 48.93. Sophomore Lauren Moden (Parker, Colo.) touched second with a time of 50.28.

Freshman Sid Farber (Portland, Ore.) and redshirt-senior Kyle Robrock (Savage, Minn.) both broke the previous Summit League record with the DU rookie finishing ahead of the fifth-year senior by 0.03 seconds. Farber was clocked in 43.26 and Robrock in 43.29, both NCAA B standards.

Senior Amanda Sanders (Superior, Colo.) recorded another B-standard in the 200 breast, reaching the wall in 2:09.14, defeating the rest of the field by nearly 10 seconds. Sophomore Courtney Laird (Overland Park, Kan.) touched second with a time of 2:19.07.

The Pioneers took three of the top four spots in the men's race. Senior Tim Cottam (Sydney, Australia) won the race by 0.08 seconds with an NCAA B Standard time of 1:58.24. Seniors Travis Greenwald (Wilton, Iowa) and Patrick Guillory (Meadows Place, Texas) touched the wall in third and fourth with times of 1:59.81 and 2:00.74.

Over to the butterfly, junior Heidi Bradley (Victoria, B.C.) continued Denver's stretch of NCAA B times, clocking in at 1:59.25 in the 200 fly. Freshman Josie Valette (Boulder, Colo.) was just behind the junior, finishing in second with a time of 1:59.90, while sophomore Avery Niemann (Oklahoma City, Okla.) reached the wall in fourth (2:02.40).

Denver took the top-four spots in the men's race, good for Denver's second podium sweep of the night. Redshirt-senior Andrew Torres (Arvada, Colo.) and freshman Colin Gilbert (Kamloops, B.C.) earned a pair of NCAA B times, while sophomore Kyle Ewoldt (Gilbert, Ariz.) and junior Ben Ussery (Austin, Texas) rounded out the top-four.

The four-day Summit League Swimming Championships closed out with a pair of 400 free relays. Roas, Moden, Andison and junior Morgan Wice-Roslin (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the pack with a time of 3:18.36. Denver's men's 400 relay sent the Pioneers to their fourth-straight league championship in style, snapping an eight-year Summit League record as Farber, Robrock, Guillory and freshman Hugo Sykes (Weston, Conn.) combined for a time of 2:55.40.
