BOSTON - University of Denver men's lacrosse senior attackman Connor Cannizzaro (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and senior close defender Christian Burgdorf (Westfield, N.J.) were both picked in the 2017 Major League Lacrosse Draft Sunday morning.
Cannizzaro was taken with the fifth overall pick by the Ohio Machine, while his Denver classmate was taken with the second pick of the third round and 20th overall by the Atlanta Blaze.
A 2016 Tewaaraton Award Finalist and a 2017 Tewaaraton Award candidate, Cannizzaro ended his career on a 58-game active point streak, tallying 66 points on 42 goals and 24 assists. Cannizzaro had eight hat tricks in his senior season, including three in Denver's last five games. The Cazenovia native was a USILA Second Team All-America pick, and a third-team selection by Inside Lacrosse.
Burgdorf earned USILA Second Team honors and was an honorable mention pick from Inside Lacrosse. The Westfield, native started all 70 games he played in, finishing second in Denver's DI history in games played and first in games started. The four-year starting close defenseman picked up 121 ground balls and caused 41 turnovers in his career, tying for third in DU history in takeaways. Burgdorf will join a Blaze roster that includes DU alums Mark Matthews and current volunteer assistant Jeremy Noble.
Both Denver players were two of 10 Senior CLASS Award finalists.
