Pioneers Finish First Two Days at the Penn Invitational

PHILADELPHIA- The University of Denver men's tennis team started its fall season this weekend taking to Philadelphia for the Penn Invitational.

Along with host Penn and DU, Yale, Georgetown, Princeton, Middle Tennessee State, Columbia and William and Mary all had participants. The three-day long invite started on Friday and concludes on Sunday.

On Friday, the Pioneers battled host Penn. The lone win for Denver came from senior Wyatt Lovera and sophomore Pedro Fernandez Del Valle as the duo beat the Penn team of Nicholai Westergaard and Josh Pompan 6-3.

Saturday, for day two action the Pioneers picked up wins from Jesse Ruder-Hook (6-7, 6-2, 6-4), Eric Morris (6-1, 6-2) and Sean Huynh (5-7, 6-2, 10 10-5). In doubles, the pairing of Morris and junior Ignatius Castelino earned a 6-3 win over the Columbia team of Taiyo Hamanaka and Jack Turchetta.

In more doubles play on Saturday, Denver split the day 2-2 to MTSU. Earning wins for the Crimson and Gold were Ruder-Hook and Fernandez (6-4) over the Blue Raiders' Jan Porteset and Tom Moonen. The other win came from Huynh and freshman Aaron Diemer (6-4), beating out Gian Issa and Nicolas Buitrago.

The Pioneers will finish up play in Philadelphia on Sunday.
