DENVER – The University of Denver men's soccer program swept all five major awards, placed five student-athletes on the first team and two on the second team to highlight the 2018 Summit League Men's Soccer Championship Banquet on Wednesday night at the DoubleTree at the Denver Tech Center.
Senior captains
Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and
Scott DeVoss (Centennial, Colo.) were named Summit League Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively, for the second-consecutive year. Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper
Will Palmquist was named the Summit League Goalkeeper of the Year. Freshman centerback
Callum Stretch (Encino, Calif.) was tabbed Summit League Newcomer of the Year and head coach
Jamie Franks earned Summit League Coach of the Year honors for the fourth time in four seasons.
Shinyashiki enters the Summit League Tournament leading the country in game-winning goals (10), goals per game (1.5), points per game (3.22), shots on goal per game (3.17), total goals (27) and total points (58). The Denver captain currently has as many goals this season (27) as was the Denver Division I career record prior to the Brazilian striker breaking it earlier this year. Outside of his production on the field, Shinyashiki is a finalist for the 2018 Senior CLASS Award (
vote here). Shinyashiki ranked No. 1 in Top Drawer Soccer's Midseason Top-100 Players.
DeVoss captained a Denver back four that led the league with 59 shots on goal allowed during the regular season, including just 16 in league matches. Denver's defense ranks 20
th in in the country in goals against average (0.734) and 13
th in shutout percentage (0.500).
Palmquist has played in nine matches this season, starting the last eight for the Crimson and Gold. In his nine appearances, he's kept a 0.74 goals against average, made 26 saves and has three solo and two shared shutouts. Palmquist has allowed just six goals in 738 minutes of action.
Stretch has paired with DeVoss at the centerback position in Denver's back-four this season. He's third on the team in minutes with 1615 and second on a Denver backline that has led the Summit League. Stretch also led Denver's defense in assists with three in the regular season, including two in Denver's 4-3 victory over Omaha to begin conference play. Stretch was rated No. 2 earlier this year in Top Drawer Soccer's Midseason Top-100 Freshmen.
Franks earned his fourth-straight Summit League Coach of the Year honor, leading his team to a 59-11-10 record in his time as head coach. Since Franks arrived as an assistant in 2012, Denver is 94-28-18.
Shinyashiki, sophomore
Jacob Stensson (Stockholm, Sweden), DeVoss, Stretch and Palmquist all earned a spot on the 2018 Summit League First Team.
Stensson finished third in the league in assists with seven from his holding midfield position, including three helpers in the Pioneers 5-0 win last week against Oral Roberts. The Denver sophomore's four assists in league play tied for the league lead in the five-match regular season.
Senior attacking midfielder
Moshe Perez (Shim'a, Israel) and senior winger
Kenny Akamatsu (Niigata, Japan) were voted to the Summit League Second Team.
Perez netted two goals to go along with five assists in nine matches in the 2018 regular season, having missed the middle half of the campaign. Despite missing nine matches, the Colorado Mesa transfer finished third on the team in the regular season in assists. Perez assisted a pair of goals in his Pioneer debut in August and scored a late equalizer and assisted on the winner in the Pioneer victory over then No. 3 Washington.
Akamatsu finished second in the league and 12
th in the country in assists per game with 0.53, while also ranking 20
th in total assists with eight. The Denver winger enters the Summit League Tournament with three goals and eight assists for 14 points, which ranks second on the team. Akamatsu scored on Senior Night last weekend, a match that saw him make his 74
th career appearance to move up to 12
th in Denver's Division I history.
Perez, freshman winger
Stefan DeLeone (Fort Collins, Colo.), Stretch and redshirt-freshman outside back
Jared Jungjohann (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) were all named to the Summit League All-Newcomer Team.
DeLeone is tied for second on the team with three goals to go along with three assists. DeLeone scored the OT winner in Denver's 1-0 result at No. 8 Creighton earlier this season. The Denver freshman also scored one in Denver's victory over Western Illinois. DeLeone was ranked 85
th in the Top Drawer Soccer's Midseason Top-100 Freshmen.
Jungjohann had a pair of helpers from his outside back position in the 2018 regular season. The redshirt-freshman ranked 48
th in the Top Drawer Soccer Midseason Freshman Top-100.

Top-seeded Denver will host fourth-seeded Eastern Illinois in the first of two Summit League Semifinals on Thursday afternoon in Denver. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MT, and will be broadcast live on Altitude. Second-seeded Omaha and third-seeded Purdue Fort Wayne will meet in the second semifinal at approximately 4 p.m. MT. Saturday's Summit League Final will kickoff at 3 p.m. MT on Altitude and ESPN3.
