Denver Closes Out Winter Training Trip in Boca Raton

Pioneers earn eight event wins in final meet of 2018

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded their annual winter training trip with the 2018 FAU Fun Invite on Thursday at the FAU Aquatic Center. Thursday's meet was not team scored, but five men's and nine women's programs competed in the invitational.
 
Denver earned eight event wins on Thursday, including multi-event win days from Cy Jager (50 breast and 100 breast) and Adriel Sanes (100 fly and 100 IM Reverse).
 
Colin Gilbert earned an event win in the men's 200 free with a 1:39.90. Trent Panzera finished in the top-5 of the five-team meet as well with a 1:45.40.
 
Annelyse Tullier was the next Pioneer to reach the podium, taking third in the 50 back with a time of 26.89. Heidi Bradley finished just behind Tullier in fourth, reaching the wall in 27.05.
 
Cameron Auchinachie finished second in the men's 50 back, clocking in at 23.16. Neil Wachtler also earned a podium spot, taking third in 23.53.
 
Jager got Denver back in the win column, finishing the men's 50 breast in 25.97 to reach the wall first. Anthony Nosack and Harrison Fudge also earned top five times in the event with a 27.27 and 27.35, respectfully.
 
Kylie Cronin and Josie Valette both earned top three finishes for the Denver women in the 100 fly, recording times of 56.56 and 56.65 to take second and third, respectively. Bradley once again found herself in the top five of an event, swimming the 100 in 57.16.
 
Sanes won the men's 100 fly with a 49.71 to lead a trio of Pioneers in the top five. Gilbert took third in 51.04 and Peter Webster grabbed the fifth position in 52.35.
 
In the men's 50 free, Denver took the third-through fifth positions. Jackson Gainer led the trio with a 21.12, Hugo Sykes swam it in 21.54 and Robin Kuebler reached the wall in 21.91.
 
Wachtler outswam his teammate Auchinachie to flip-flop spots in the men's 100 back. Wachtler swam it in 50.05, while Auchinachie swam a 51.62.
 
Brandi Vu earned her first top five finish of the afternoon in the women's 100 breast, taking fifth with a 1:05.97.
 
Jager picked up his second win of the day in the men's 100 breast, clocking in at 56.72.
 
Keubler led the Pioneers distances swimmers in the men's 500 on Thursday, reaching the final wall in 4:47.63.
 
Bradley recorded the first women's victory in the nine-team field in the 100 IM reverse, coming in at 59.62. Sanes completed the Denver sweep in the event, taking the men's race with a 51.86.
 
Valette made it two-straight women's victories with her 25.46 in the women's 50 fly to finish ahead of the rest of the 39-swimmer field.
 
Wachtler and Webster finished second and third in the men's 50 fly with a 22.95 and 23.41, respectively.
 
After swimming in the backstroke events earlier in the meet, Auchinachie secured the 100 free victory (45.26), his second of the season in the event and his sixth freestyle event win overall in 2018-19. Patrick Groters also clocked in in the top-five with a time of 47.87.
 
On the diving boards Thursday, Sammy Walker took fourth with a 232.55 in the 1-meter, while Alex Morgan took third in the men's 1-meter event with a 234.20.
 
Zora Opalka led the women's divers in the 3-meter with another podium finish, scoring a 234.50. Morgan once again finished third in the men's 3-meter, receiving a 243.00.

UP NEXT: Denver's divers will be in action at El Pomar on January 11 against Colorado Mesa at 12 p.m. MT. The swimmers will be back in the water January 18-19 at UNLV with UC Santa Barbara.
