March 28, 2018 DENVER - Two University of Denver gymnasts earned regular season All-American honors, the National Association of College Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) announced late Tuesday. Sophomore Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) and junior Kaitlyn Schou (Orlando, Fla.) picked up a combined five All-American nods.
Karr earned four honors including first-team recognition in the all-around and on vault after finishing the regular season ranked No. 5 in the all-around and tied for No. 6 on vault. The sophomore also added second-team nods on bars and beam. She is only the second DU gymnast to earn four regular season All-American honors in the same season, joining Nina McGee in 2016. Karr now owns a combined nine All-American honors-six regular season and three postseason.
Schou was named a second-team All-American on beam following her tie for No. 10 nationally on the event after the regular season. It is the first All-American nod of her career.
This is the second consecutive season that multiple DU gymnasts earned regular season All-American recognition in the same year.
Regular season All-American honors are awarded based on final Regional Qualifying Scores (RQS) ahead of NCAA Regionals. Student-athletes who are ranked No. 1-8 (including ties) earn first-team status while those ranked No. 9-16 (including ties) earn second-team status.
Postseason All-American honors are awarded following semifinal competition at the NCAA National Championships.
No. 13 DU will compete at NCAA Regionals on April 7 in Minneapolis. Joining Denver will be No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 12 Kentucky, host No. 24 Minnesota, Iowa State and Iowa.
