Will Butcher Wins Bronze Medal at IIHF World Championship

May 21, 2018

DENVER -

Will Butcher capped an impressive rookie season with the New Jersey Devils by winning a bronze medal with the United States at the 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship on Sunday in Denmark.

The United States' 4-1 win against Canada in the third-place game handed the Americans their first medal in the tournament since 2015. Butcher finished the tournament with a goal, two assists and a +1 rating in 10 games. On May 5, he scored the game-winning goal in the Americans' 4-0 win against Denmark in the preliminary round.

After playing four seasons at the University of Denver (2013-2017), helping the Pioneers to the 2017 National Championship and winning the 2017 Hobey Baker Award, Butcher joined the Devils and quickly set records. Butcher became the first player in Devils history to record three points in his NHL debut and became the first rookie defenseman in NHL history to have at least eight assists in his first five games in the league. He finished with 44 points in 81 regular season games, which tied for fourth in team-scoring, and four points in five career playoff games.
