Pioneers Turn in Strong Swims at Senior Sectionals

Men win 800 free relay, Sid Farber takes 100 free

GRESHAM, Ore. – The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving programs opened the 2018 Senior Sectionals with 10 individual finals swims and a relay win on Thursday night at Mt. Hood Community College.
 
Freshman Cameron Auchinachie (Binghamton, N.Y.), sophomore Hugo Sykes (Weston, Conn.), classmate Neil Wachtler (Waco, Texas) and Pioneer assistant coach Kyle Robrock combined for a victory in the 800 free relay to open up Denver's Thursday, as the quarter combined for a 7:39.95 to take the gold.
 
The Pioneers night opened with two finalists in the women's 100 free. Sophomore Josie Valette (Boulder, Colo.) led the Denver duo with a fourth place finish in 57.48. Redshirt-senior Heidi Bradley (Victoria, B.C.) touched the wall in 11th with a time of 58.28.
 
Denver earned five finals spots in the men's 100 free, including four top-10 finishes. Sophomore Sid Farber (Portland, Ore) won both the prelims and the finals to take his spot atop the podium on Thursday night in 50.28. Sykes clocked in at 52.03 to take fourth, Robrock took eighth with a 52.91 and Wachtler earned a 10th place finish with a 52.15. Auchinachie jumped four spots up the ladder from his prelims to finals time, taking 17th in 51.41.
 
In the women's 200 breast, freshman Ally Yancy (Cave Creek, Ariz.) reached her first A-Final of the meet with a sixth-place finish, touching the wall in 2:39.77.
 
On the men's side, freshman Anthony Nosack (Beaverton, Ore.) earned Denver's seventh of eight top-10 finishes on the night with a 2:22.28 to take 10th.
 
Valette's second A-Final appearance Thursday produced a seventh-place finish in the women's 200 fly as the Denver sophomore clocked in at 2:21.75.
