Pioneers improve to 2-2-2 with victory over previously unbeaten Columbia
DENVER – Junior Hannah Adler (Oak Park, Calif.) scored an 85th minute winner off assists from sophomore Meg Halvorson (Englewood, Colo.) and freshman Camryn MacMillan (Littleton, Colo.) to lead the University of Denver women's soccer team past previously unbeaten Columbia 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
Adler appeared the have the breakthrough in the 13th minute after a Halvorson cross got by the Columbia (2-1-1) keeper to the back post and Adler tapped it into the empty net, but referee Chris Levesque waved off the Adler shot, spotting a foul on MacMillan in the middle of the six-yard box.
Just after the hour mark, MacMillan was in the center of the Denver (2-2-2) opener after she was wrapped up from behind by Columbia defender Sam Slusher 15 yards away from goal on a run that would have sent the Denver freshman 1-v-1 with the keeper. Halvorson stepped up to the penalty spot and netted her second goal of the season and the seventh of her still young collegiate career.
The Lions threw numbers forward in the final half hour and got their equalizer in the 83rd minute from Emma Anderson. Cayla Davis and Emily Koe played the ball around the top of the box before Koe slipped in Anderson for the visitor's leveler.
Adler did get her second goal of the year and the 15th of her three-year Pioneer career in the 85th minute as MacMillan played a pass into the box to Halvorson, who beat her defender to the endline before crossing it to Adler. The Denver junior's six-yard strike was hammered it into the roof of the net to send the home side back in-front 124 seconds after the equalizer.
Denver outshot Columbia 10-6 in the win following Friday's match that saw the Pioneers play a scoreless 110 minutes against Iowa State.
