Game Preview: No. 4 Denver vs. No. 14 Western Michigan

The No. 4 Denver Pioneers men's hockey team (14-4-3, 6-4-1-1) looks to extend its eight-game unbeaten streak on the road against No. 13 Western Michigan (13-8-1, 6-5-1-1) at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. Puck drop is set for 5:05 p.m. MT on Friday and Saturday.

DENVER: SNAPSHOT
• The Pioneers are on an eight-game unbeaten streak (7-0-1), their best stretch since starting the season 5-0-1 and longest since their 13-game winning streak from Jan. 21, 2017 - March 11, 2017
• The Pioneers average 3.43 goals per game, 9th in the NCAA, and allow an average of 2.19 goals per game, 12th in the NCAA
Liam Finlay leads the Pioneers with 24 points, followed by each member of Denver's top line: Emilio Pettersen (21), Jarid Lukosevicius (20) and Cole Guttman (17)
 
DENVER: LAST SERIES
Colorado College 4, Denver 4 (Denver won in NCHC shootout)
• After the game on Jan. 18 was postponed until Feb. 26, the Pioneers played only a single game against the Tigers last weekend
Brett Stapley had two goals, one assist and the shootout-winning goal
• The Pioneers went 0/2 on the power play and 1/4 on the penalty kill
• Denver outshot Colorado College, 33-30
 
DENVER: UP NEXT
Denver vs. North Dakota (Feb. 1-2, 2019)
• The Pioneers and Fighting Hawks are set to close their season series in Magness Arena
• Denver split the series at North Dakota on Dec. 7-8, 2018, falling 4-1 on Friday and winning 2-1 in overtime on Saturday
 
WESTERN MICHIGAN: SNAPSHOT
• The Broncos had their 10-game unbeaten streak snapped at No. 2 St. Cloud State last weekend, getting swept for only the second time this season
• Western Michigan averages 3.50 goals per game, 6th in the NCAA, and allows 2.86 goals per game, 32nd in the NCAA
• Josh Passolt leads the Broncos with 23 points (14-9-23)
• Junior forward Wade Allison has missed 14 games this season, including the last four. He has 63 points (29-34-63) in 66 NCAA games
 
WESTERN MICHIGAN: LAST SERIES
St. Cloud State 3, Western Michigan 0 | St. Cloud State 5, Western Michigan 3
• The Broncos were shutout on Friday for the first time this season
• St. Cloud State outscored Western Michigan 6-0 in the second period
• Western Michigan went 0/5 on the power play and 7/9 on the penalty kill
• Trevor Gorsuch made 57 saves on 63 shots
 
WESTERN MICHIGAN: UP NEXT
Western Michigan at Omaha (Feb. 1-2)
• The Broncos will complete their season series with the Mavericks after splitting a series in Kalamazoo, Mich. earlier this year
• Western Michigan defeated Omaha 7-2 on Nov. 9 and fell 4-2 on Nov. 10

DENVER VS. WESTERN MICHIGAN
• The Pioneers swept the Broncos at Magness Arena on Nov. 2-3, 2018
• Western Michigan defeated Denver 6-5 and 7-4 in Lawson Arena last season
• The teams first played on Nov. 26, 1982 with the Pioneers winning 5-1

Ian Mitchell (Canada) had one goal and two assists in five games
• Equipment manager Nick Meldrum (U.S.) won a silver medal with the Americans
Emilio Pettersen (Norway) finished 5th scoring at the Division I - A tournament with three goals and three assists in six games
 
TOUGH ROAD AHEAD
• Denver's strength of schedule ranks 3rd in the NCAA according to the KRACH ranking on CollegeHockeyNews.com
• After wrapping up the non-conference schedule with an 8-0-2 record, Denver has 14-straight conference games to close the regular season
 
FRESH FACES
• Denver's freshmen class is 3rd in NCAA scoring with 79 points (28-51-79) behind Niagara (86) and Quinnipiac (80)
• The Pioneers' freshmen class accounts for 40% of the of the team's total points and 39% of the team's total goals
Emilio Pettersen is 4th among NCAA freshman with 21 points
Cole Guttman is 2nd among NCAA freshmen with 10 goals
Slava Demin is 3rd among NCAA freshmen with a +18 plus/minus rating
 
WORKING OVERTIME
• The Pioneers have played eight overtime games this season, 2nd-most in the NCAA. Denver is 4-1-3 in the extra period with the most overtime wins in the NCAA
 
MILLER HOCKEY COMPLEX
• The new home of Denver hockey is named after University of Denver's Board of Trustees member John A. Miller, his wife, Sandy, and their family
• The 4,464 square foot space houses the Pioneers' lockers, lounge, sauna, kitchen, training room and equipment room
• More than 150 donors contributed to the $2.5 million renovation
 
YOUNG PIONEERS
• At 29, David Carle is the youngest coach in Division I college hockey
• The Pioneers have the fourth-youngest team in college hockey with an average age of 20 years/8 months
• The Pioneers have 20 freshmen and sophomores, the most since the 2007-08 season when Tyler Bozak was a freshman
 
EXPERIENCED STAFF
• Assistant Coach Tavis MacMillan served as head coach of Alaska-Fairbanks from 2004-07
• Assistant Coach Dallas Ferguson served as head coach of Alaska-Fairbanks from 2008-17
• Volunteer Assistant Coach Steven Reinprecht played 663 NHL games over 11 NHL seasons, winning a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001
• Team Manager Ben Scrivens played 144 NHL games over five NHL seasons in addition to representing Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics
