Slattery Named Interim Assistant Coach

DENVER - The Denver Pioneers women's tennis team has named associate head coach Jesse Medvene-Collins interim head coach and program alumnae Maureen Slattery interim assistant coach while head coach Christian Bass takes maternity leave.

"I am very excited to have Maureen step in as Interim Assistant Coach during my absence," Bass said. "She will be able to help develop our athletes with her knowledge and expertise coaching at the college level the past few seasons in Virginia. She was an integral part of our program from 2013-2017 with a stellar career as a student-athlete reaching All American status in 2017. She understands the culture that we have created here which will help push our players to new heights – that is invaluable for us."

Slattery spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia where she helped guide the Captains to a combined 26-14 mark. In four seasons with the Pioneers, Slattery was thrice honored on the All-Summit League team, named 2014 ITA Mountain Region Rookie of the Year and recognized as 2017 Summit League Player of the Year.  In her senior year, Slattery advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Doubles Championships with partner Julia O'Loughin, becoming the program's first All-Americans. Slattery graduated with a degree in economics in 2017.

Medvene-Collins joined the Pioneers in June after serving last season as an assistant coach for the Delaware men's tennis team, helping the Blue Hens to a 14-14 mark. Prior to his stint at Delaware, Medvene-Collins spent six seasons as the associate head coach for the William & Mary women's tennis team where he helped the Tribe to five Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championships and was twice named ITA Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year (2015, 2017). He coached four CAA Players of the Year, three CAA Rookies of the Year, 20 ITA Scholar-Athletes, 16 All-CAA singles players and eight All-CAA doubles pairs at William & Mary.
