PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Denver men's and women's swimming and diving programs set another school record, turned in six more NCAA Standards and recorded 12 personal best times to cap off the second day of competition at the 2019 Big Al Open on Saturday night at Denunzio Pool.
Denver's women opened the night with a podium finish in the women's 200 medley relay when
Natalie Arky (Highlands Ranch, Colo.),
Brandi Vu (Longmont, Colo.),
Kylie Cronin (Marblehead, Mass.) and
Josie Valette (Boulder, Colo.) combined for a time of 1:40.51.
Following a 200 free relay school record and NCAA automatic qualification swim in a time trial this afternoon by junior
Cameron Auchinachie (Binghamton, N.Y.), redshirt-junior
Sid Farber (Portland, Ore.), junior
Cy Jager (Moscow, Idaho) and classmate
Adriel Sanes (Rosharon, Texas), the quartet set another school record this evening, combining for a time of 1:24.63 in the 200 medley on Saturday night. Tonight's school record bested the previous record by 1.10 seconds, previously held by
Neil Wachtler (Waco, Texas), Jager,
Stephen Calkins and Farber's swim in 2018. Denver's swim on Saturday was good enough for an NCAA B Standard and the event win.
In the first individual event of the evening, junior
Charlotte Simon (Saint Remy, France) clocked in at 4:25.89 to take eighth in the 400 IM. Junior
Emily Vandenberg (Ajax, Ontario) and classmate
Uma Knaven (Chapel Hill, N.C.) took 11
th and 14
th, respectively, with times of 4:23.97 and 4:26.06.
Freshman
Riley Babson (Vail, Ariz.) and sophomore
David Mihalic (Ljubljana, Slovenia) finished 1-2 in the B-Final of the men's 400 IM, including a personal best time of 3:52.00 from Babson.
Denver grabbed two podium spots in the women's 100 fly on Saturday night. Valette swam the event in 53.28, edging out Cronin who reached the wall in 53.91 to take third. In the B-Final, junior
Deniz Ozkan (Istanbul, Turkey) recorded a 14
th place finish with her time of 55.28.
Farber gave Denver another podium finish in the 100 fly, clocking in at 47.13, a new personal best and NCAA B Standard for the redshirt-junior. Redshirt-senior
Graham Walker (Nairobi, Kenya) finished 16
th with his 49.71.
Junior
Aysia Leckie (Georgetown, Ontario) reached the wall in the 200 free in 1:50.69 to take seventh in the A-Final.
Livi Schmid (Fairfax Station, Va.),
Andi Johnston (Fort Collins, Colo.) and freshman
Sofia Nosack (Beaverton, Ore.) scored for the Pioneers with 13
th, 15
th and 16
th place finishes.
Senior
Hugo Sykes (Weston, Conn.) shaved 0.18 seconds off his prelims time to finish fourth in the 200 free in 1:37.22. Sophomore
Darragh Mahns (Missoula, Mont.) finished seventh in the A-Final with a 1:39.38. Freshman
Spencer Adrian (Portland, Ore.) scored out of the B-Final for Denver with a time of 1:38.63 (13
th).
Vu's time of 1:02.74 was good enough to finish fifth in the 100 breast on Saturday night. Freshman
Sophia Bricker (Colorado Springs, Colo.) turned in another personal best in the event to take ninth with a 1:04.01. Denver got additional points from Vandenberg in 12
th (1:04.34), Simon in 13
th (1:05.15) and Yancy in 15
th (1:05.51).
On the men's side, Sanes and Jager kept the top two spots in the 100 breast from this morning's prelims. Sanes edged out his teammate with a 53.57, 0.03 seconds ahead of Jager, who dropped 0.47 seconds off his Saturday morning time with a 53.60. Junior
Anthony Nosack (Beaverton, Ore.) finished 12
th in 55.38 and
Harrison Fudge (Stanford, Ill.) took 13
th in 55.61.
Arky dropped 0.57 seconds off her 100 back prelim time from this morning to win the B-Final with a 55.39 to highlight Denver's women's swimmers in the event on Saturday.
Auchinachie matched Arky's improvement in the 100 back, shaving off 0.57 seconds off his prelims time from this morning to turn in a 46.23. Wachtler rounded out the podium, improving on his prelim time from this morning as well with a 47.84.
Following a break, Denver's 800 free relay finished fourth on the women's side with a 7:23.39 on swims from Schmid, Nosack, Johnston and Leckie. Denver's men got on the podium with a 6:30.03 with swims from Auchinachie, Sykes, Mahns and Farber.
In men's diving on Saturday,
