Sand and Missura Impressive in Round 1 of Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

Pioneers tied for eighth after day one of tournament
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – The University of Denver golf team got a strong start in the opening round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate on Friday. The Pioneers fired a team score of 300, 12-over-par.
Par for the 7,305-yard course was 72.
The duo of second-year players John Sand and Esteban Missura had their games on point on the day, each shooting a 1-over 73 for the round to tie for 11th, helping power DU into a tie for eighth after 18 holes in the talented 21-team field.
Missura racked up two birdies on the day in his round while Sand recorded four.
No. 18 Texas Tech and No. 47 Colorado State, who the Crimson and Gold played in a dual earlier in the week, are tied atop the team leaderboard at 2-over.
Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Cal McCoy, Esteban Missura, John Sand, Carson Griggs and Jun Ho Won.
Jackson Solem, Eric Hagen and Roy Kang also competed, but as individuals.
"The guys battled and fought hard in some really tough conditions today on the back nine," Billinger said. "Esteban and John kept us in the tournament with impressive 73s. We got a lot more golf to play over the next two days and we are going to stay focused and determined."
Freshmen Cal McCoy and Carson Griggs each posted a pair of 77s for the round, putting them in a tie for 64th.
Ho Won closed out his day with a 12-over 84.
Hagen wrapped up the afternoon tied for 24th while Solem tied for 34th.
Kang closed out his round with an 81.
Day two of the tournament is set for Saturday.
