Missura Gets Hot as Pioneers Wrap Up Day 1 of Bandon Dunes Championship

Pioneers in fifth after 18 holes
BANDON, Ore. – The University of Denver golf team got a huge performance from redshirt freshman Esteban Missura on day one of the Bandon Dunes Championship. The redshirt freshman's good day helped lead the Pioneers to a tie for fifth after 18 holes of action.
Par at the 6,954-yard Bandon Dunes Course was 72.
Ohio State leads all teams though one round at 3-over on the team leaderboard, three strokes ahead of Utah in the competitive 17-team field which features three teams in the top 32 of the Golfstat rankings.
The Buckeyes' Daniel Wetterich is the leader for individuals at 3-under, one stroke ahead of the Utes' Blake Tomlinson.
Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Cal McCoy, John Sand, Roy Kang, Eric Hagen and Missura.
"Today was a classic March day at Bandon Dunes," Billinger said. "The wind increased every hour as the day went on and you really had to miss it in the right spots and play extremely smart and have control of your own shots since the wind was howling."
Missura kept a pretty consistent round on the afternoon, finishing tied for third at even par. The Ecuador native got it going on the back nine, firing a 2-under. The round of 72 marked the fourth time this season that Missura has posted par-or-better on the day.
"Esteban played a great round and shot even par," Billinger added. "Eric played very solid and shot a 2-over. Overall, we are excited about the next two days as we are focused on controlling what we can control and let the results just happen."
Hagen also had a strong showing on Sunday, tying for 14th with a 2-over 74.
McCoy and Sand wrapped up their respective days tied for 45th at 5-over.
Kang fired an 82 on Sunday.
Round two of the tournament is set for Monday.
