Denver Closes Out Arizona Wildcat Invitational

Pioneers pick up three Power 5 wins; highlighted by victory over No. 25 Purdue
TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Denver golf team finished up the Arizona Wildcat Invitational on Tuesday, taking eighth. The Pioneers posted a team score of 908, 44-over par for the three rounds of the event.
Par for the 6,494-yard course was 72 at the Sewailo Golf Club.
No. 17 Arizona State rose up on the final day of play to take home the team title at 22-over, seven strokes ahead of No. 32 Oregon.
DU, though, picked up head-to-head wins against three Power-5 schools, highlighted by a victory over No. 25 Purdue.
Head coach Lindsay Kuhle went with the lineup of Mary Weinstein, Sophie Newlove, Alyson Bean, Camille Enright and Trussy Li.
Anni Heck also competed, but as an individual.
"Today was another tough round for the Pios and difficult playing conditions," Kuhle said. "It was cold, windy and rainy throughout the day and a grind out there. I'm really proud of our top three finishers today in Camille, Sophie and Mary.
"Unfortunately, we didn't hit many wedges close today and struggled a bit with our short putts. Our ball striking off the tee and chipping and bunker game is the best it's looked all year. We will continue to work on wedges and our putting this season."
Weinstein posted a 4-over 76 on her final day of the tournament to finish at 11-over for the 54-hole event, putting her in a tie for 22nd.
Newlove (12-over) really found her groove on the last day of action, firing a 3-over 75 in her final 18 holes to rise up seven spots on the individual leaderboard to finish tied for 30th with fellow teammate Enright.
Enright (12-over) ended up tied for 30th after putting up a 4-over on her scorecard on Tuesday afternoon.
Li closed out the round tied for 33rd with a three-round total of 13-over.
Bean finished up tied for 63rd.
"Counting an 80 is always hard and obviously not ideal," Kuhle added. "I really believe though that our 4-6 players are improving and learning every tournament round and are well prepared for the rest of the season and postseason because of these experiences. I truly believe this spring season is about improving and learning every tournament and gaining confidence and we are doing just that.
"This team works very hard and I know this two-week break until our dual match with No. 4 UCLA in the spring break desert match at Superstition Mountain. We will be prepared and ready to go."
Heck closed out her tournament tied for 71st.
Denver is back in action for a spring break match on Mar. 26.
