Weinstein Ties for Seventh as Pios Beat No. 21 Crimson Tide in Stroke Play

Denver opens match play with Iowa on Friday
ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Denver golf team wrapped up stroke play on day one of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic on Thursday. The Pioneers fired a team score of 305, 17-over-par.
DU finished tied for ninth in the 12-team field that featured eight teams in the top 50 of the most recent Golfstat rankings.
The Crimson and Gold did pick up a head-to-head win over 21st-ranked Alabama on the round while qualifying for the Black bracket portion of match play tomorrow, where they will open up with Iowa.
Head coach Lindsay Kuhle went with the lineup of Mary Weinstein, Sophie Newlove, Camille Enright, Alyson Bean and Trussy Li.
"Today we got off to a rough start," Kuhle said. "We struggled with the par 3s today, which is usually our strength and our overall putting. Bermuda grass and big undulating greens takes a little to get used to and more to adjust to but I think the more we play this course, the more comfortable we become and the more experience we get.
"Overall, I'm pleased with our three low scores. We just didn't have that competitive score in the fourth spot that we needed to finish in the top eight. A 76 would have done that for us today."
"We'll play Alabama, Iowa and Daytona State College the next three rounds," Kuhle added. "We hope to make some necessary mental adjustments and course management plays to improve and prepare for the postseason."
For Denver, Weinstein tied for seventh on the afternoon, shooting a 1-over 73, five strokes off the lead. The Highlands Ranch native opened strong, going 3-under on the front nine.
"Mary was phenomenal again this round, earning six wins over top 100 players in the field," Kuhle said of the junior. "She has been nothing short of spectacular for us this spring season. She continues to hit it well and is making more putts as of late."
Enright closed out her round tied for 23rd at 3-over (75).
Bean posted a 5-over on the day to tie for 39th.
Li finished up tied for 50th.
Newlove tied for 58th.
