FORT WORTH, Texas – University of Denver sophomore
Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) won the NCAA Floor Title on Friday during the NCAA semifinals.
Brown becomes Denver's second individual national champion at the Division I level. She joins Nina McGee, who also won the NCAA floor title in 2016 and did so in the same arena as Brown – the Fort Worth Convention Center. Both gymnasts scored 9.950s to claim their championships, which is the highest floor score by a DU gymnast at the NCAA National Championships.
The DU sophomore credits McGee for helping her win the title, saying the Denver alumna has become her mentor. "It's brought out my personality. It's brought out my confidence," Brown says. "So just having her support and having her tell me, 'You know, you're going to do this. I'm so proud of you,' and just having her as a mentor has really been good for me."
In addition to her national title, Brown picked up four postseason All-American honors including first team in the all-around and on floor, and second team on bars and beam. She was one of five DU gymnasts that earned All-American nods on Friday.
Brown's performance on floor helped the Pioneers advance to their first-ever NCAA Team Final. DU finished second during Friday's Semifinal II competition and will next compete in the debut of the "Four on the Floor" team championship round on Saturday, April 20. Competition begins at 6:00 p.m. CT/5:00 p.m. MT and will be televised live on ESPNU.
