MILWAUKEE – The No. 15 University of Denver women's lacrosse team will face Georgetown in the BIG EAST Tournament Championship, held in Milwaukee, Wis., on Saturday, May 4 at 12:30 p.m. MT. The Pioneers defeated Villanova 15-5 to advance to the finals, improving their record to 14-2 on the year. Georgetown took down Marquette 17-10 in the semifinals and improved to a 10-8 record this season.
The Pioneers are 3-2 all-time in BIG EAST Tournament games, a perfect 3-0 in semifinal contests and 0-2 in the championship match. The last time Denver played Georgetown was back on April 6 in Washington D.C. where the Crimson and Gold came out victorious with a 12-9 win. The two teams were evenly matched, both putting up 24 total shots and 19 shots on goal. The goalies proved to be the difference maker;
Carson Gregg totaled 10 saves while Georgetown's Haelle Chomo and Micheline Dinardo combined for seven.
Quintin Hoch-Bullen led the team with four goals against the Hoyas, followed by
Julia Feiss (3),
Elizabeth Behrins (1) and
Eliza Radochonski (1).
Georgetown looks for its second BIG EAST Title in program history, having won the tournament back in 2010. They Hoyas are 8-11 all-time in BIG EAST tournament games, and are 0-2 against the Pioneers, losing in the semifinals in both 2017 and 2018. Grace Whitehurst, the Co-BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, was essential in the Georgetown's win over Marquette on Thursday, posting a team-high six goals and eight points for the Hoyas to clinch a spot in the championship game.
Following the championship game, the Pioneers will await their fate in the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Selection Show is set to air Sunday, May 5 at 6 p.m. MT.
