Pios Sweep Oral Roberts On The Road

TULSA, OKLA. - The University of Denver volleyball team snatched their first Summit League victory of the season with a sweep of Oral Roberts on Sunday.

The win moves the Pios to 1-1 in conference play and 9-5 overall while the Golden Eagles drop to 4-12 overall and 0-2 in Summit League action.

The Pioneers came out swinging in set one, opening the match with three-straight kills to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. Continuing to shine offensively, DU saw their largest lead come at 21-10 following a 7-2 run. Three points late in the set from ORU wasn't enough to close the gap as the Crimson and Gold sailed to a 25-14 victory.

Seeing the score deadlocked four times in the opening points of the second set, the Pios were finally able to break through after a pair of kills from Ari Winters gave them an 11-8 advantage. After forcing a Golden Eagle timeout at 13-8, ORU stormed back to get themselves within one at 16-15 and continued to chip away taking their first lead of the set when they jumped on top at 23-22. Denver buckled down in the end, grabbing the final two points of the set to top the Gold Eagles 26-24.

A back and forth start to set three put the Pios on top 10-7 early on. A 3-0 run by the Golden Eagles threatened the Pioneers, cutting their lead to 22-19. Finding a way to tie things at 23, ORU was unable to stop the Pioneers from scoring the final two points of the set as DU clinched the third set, 25-23 and the match 3-1

Freshman Kalea Fobert and junior Tina Boe both topped the kill-column for the Pios adding a team-high ten each. Ellie Anderson and Lorrin Poulter each locked in a team-high of 17 assists while Poulter also added a career-high of three service aces. Continuing to lead the Pioneers defensively, freshman Brianna Green recorded three blocks in the match while Macy Carrabine had a team-high nine digs.

Denver will return to their home court as they gear up to face South Dakota State in Denver on Friday (7 PM MT).
