Match Preview: Denver Heads to Virginia for Monday Night Clash

The Pioneers step back out of conference play for the final two times in the regular season this week

DENVER – Following a 3-0-0 start to Summit League play, the Pioneers will jump back out of conference action this week to travel to Virginia on Monday at 4 p.m. MT. DU will then return home to take on Stanford on Saturday at 4 p.m. MT at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

Jack and Sheila Weinberg Head Men's Soccer Coach Jamie Franks:
Jamie Franks is in his seventh season as the bench boss for the Pioneers and his 10th on the Denver campus overall. The head coach of the 2016 National Coaching Staff of the Year has put together a 80-28-14 record and has led Denver to all but two of the league trophies available (2019 regular season and 2017 postseason) since Denver joined the Summit League in 2013.

 Series History: Denver vs. Virginia:
The Pioneers fell 3-0 to Virginia in the only previous meeting between the two programs back in 2018.

Last Time Out:
Denver got three goals from three different goal scorers to remain perfect in Summit League play with a 3-1 home victory over St. Thomas on Saturday night at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. Stefan DeLeone was involved in all three tallies for the Pios, scoring the opener and assisting on goals from Ben Smith and Lukas Fisher.

Notes:
-          Two-time captain Liam Johnson was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
-          Denver's freshman class was ranked the seventh-best recruiting class in the country according to Top Drawer Soccer.
-          Denver is 73-8-6 at home since Jamie Franks joined the staff in 2012.
-          The Pioneers are 39-6-5 in Summit League play since joining the league in 2013.
-          On Monday, Lukas Fisher was named the Summit League Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.

Up Next:
The Pioneers will return home Saturday night for a meeting with Stanford at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. MT.
