[RV/20] Denver and Cal Poly Draw 2-2 in Season Opener
8/20/2026 10:31:00 PM | Men's Soccer
The Pioneers will close out the opening weekend on Sunday when Denver travels to 9th-ranked Stanford
DENVER – The [RV/20] University of Denver men's soccer program opened its 2026 season with a 2–2 draw against Cal Poly on Thursday evening at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
Scoring Summary:
[RV] Denver: Kallay 32' (Orchard, Collins), Kelly 51'
Cal Poly: Pearce '24, Hogan 89' (Marmion, Gutierrez)
Significant Stats:
- Having not played due to injury since the 2023 season, senior Dominic Kallay netted his first career goal to level the match just after the half hour mark.
- Sophomore outside back Erik Collins earned the primary assist on the first-half leveler, the second of his career.
- Freshman Ethan Orchard had the secondary assist in his collegiate debut.
- Junior Keegan Kelly's first goal of the campaign came in the second half, giving him 10 in his career.
Key Moments:
1' Denver earned the season's first corner on its first possession of the season, but Cal Poly cleared the danger.
10' Centerback and DU captain Grant Lund stopped a promising Cal Poly attack just outside the area, and went into the book. The Mustangs free kick was over everyone's head and out for a goal kick.
13' The first shot of the night came from Rylan Firouznam's head off a cross from the right channel, but it was over debutant Alex Hohl's crossbar.
24' On a Cal Poly free kick central, Denver's centerbacks had two chances to clear it, but the second fell to the boot of Colin Pearce knocked it into the open net from five-yards out to put the visitors ahead at the midway point of the first half.
32' After a flurry of subs on both sides, Dominic Kallay leveled the match at 1-1 off his chest. Freshman Ethan Orchard played a cross in from the right channel that was headed back across goal by Erik Collins. Kallay made the run to the near post and he chested it into the open net from inside the six-yard box. The goal was challenged by Cal Poly for offside in the buildup, but the call stood.
48' Following his thrilling finish to the 2025 season, Keegan Kelly nearly scored in the opening stages of the second half on a lofted cross from the Denver left. Kelly chested the ball down to himself and tried to flick it in from 10-yards out, but his attempt was right at the keeper.
51' Kelly took advantage of his second opportunity of the night as a back pass gone wrong in the Mustangs' backline was short of the keeper, and in the press, Kelly was the first to the ball, touched the ball around the keeper and then slid it into the open net for the go-ahead tally.
67' Kelly did his work on the defensive end as well, breaking up a cross as Cal Poly search for an equalizer, and Denver cleared its lines.
71' Bryce Willoughby had the first chance to double Denver's advantage, getting in behind the Mustangs' backline, but a heavy last touch left room for the keeper to come out and hold onto it near the edge of the area.
89' With the last chance of the night Kevin Jimenez Gutierrez beat a pair of Denver defenders down the Mustangs' left, and got the ball to Peyton Marmion who played a dangerous cross into the box that flicked off the head of Charlie Hogan and nestled into the side netting to level the match.
