DENVER – The University of Denver hockey team defeated the Lindenwood Lions 9-1 in an exhibition contest on Saturday night at Magness Arena.
Freshman
Jack Works scored twice for the Pioneers, while
Brett Stapley (one goal, one assist),
Carter Savoie (two assists),
Cole Guttman (two assists),
Bobby Brink (two assists) and
Carter Mazur (one goal, one assist) also had multi-point efforts.
Massimo Rizzo,
Cameron Wright,
Ryan Barrow,
Mike Benning,
Shai Buium also tallied in the game.
Goaltenders
Magnus Chrona and
Matt Davis split time in net for Denver, with Chrona starting and making five-of-six saves in 29:18 of work. Davis stopped all eight shots he faced in the back half of the night.
Lindenwood opened the scoring just 1:49 into the first period with Mitch Allard scoring on a redirection in front, but DU responded less that four minutes later as Works recorded his first goal of the evening. Stapley scored 1:04 later to give the Pioneers a lead at 5:49 that they never relinquished.
Denver led 3-1 at the first intermission following Buium's marker at 13:23 and added five more tallies in the middle frame to take an 8-1 advantage heading into the third period. Works registered his second of the game midway through the final stanza.
DU outshot LU 58-14 and finished 2-for-3 on the power play, with Mazur and Wright registering man-advantage markers late in the second period. The Lions went 0-for-4 on the power play.
UP NEXT: Denver begins the regular season on homecoming weekend as Arizona State comes to Magness Arena for a back-to-back next Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8-9.
