DU Finishes Season Ranked No. 10 in the Country

Third-straight top-10 final ranking for Denver, fourth in the last five years

DENVER – The University of Denver gymnastics team is ranked No. 10 in the final Road to Nationals rankings, released on Monday.

It is the third-straight season that DU has ended the season ranked in the top 10 in the nation. Denver was No. 7 at the end of the shortened 2020 season, and the team finished a historic No. 4 in 2019 following its NCAA Championship Final appearance.

This is also the fourth season in the last five that DU held a top-10 team ranking at the end of the year after finishing No. 9 in 2017. Prior to 2017, DU had finished ranked in the top 10 only once, doing so in 2007.

DENVER'S FINAL 2021 RANKINGS
Overall: No. 10 (394.619)
Vault: No. 18 (49.200)
Bars: No. 2 (49.500)
Beam: No. 8 (49.413)
Floor: No. 9 (49.463)

Final team rankings are determined by teams' scores at NCAA Nationals or NCAA Regionals, which is added to their final National Qualifying Score (NQS) from the regular season. For Denver, the team's 197.275 from the NCAA Regional Final on April 3 is added to its final regular-season NQS of 197.344.

Final event and individual rankings are determined solely by final NQSs before NCAA Regionals. For 2021, NQS calculation was modified to accommodate COVID-19. For this year only, NQS was calculated with the four highest scores of the season, at least two of which must be from away meets. No scores were dropped this year, and the four scores were averaged.

DU's final ranking of No. 2 on bars is not only a program record for the end of the season but is the highest Denver has ever been ranked on the event at any point of any season. The team's final bars NQS of 49.500 is also a school record and is only the second time that DU has achieved an NQS of 49.500+ on any event, joining floor in 2004.

Denver will also finish with its second-highest NQSs on beam and floor, and the eighth-highest on vault.

This is only the second time in Denver history that the team has held NQSs above 49.400 on three events in a single year, joining only the 2019 season.

INDIVIDUAL NATIONAL RANKINGS
Senior Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.)
All-Around: tie-No. 2 (39.756)
Vault: tie-No. 12 (9.925)
Bars: No. 2 (9.969)
Beam: tie-No. 21 (9.919)
Floor: No. 3 (9.969)

Junior Alexis Vasquez (Arcadia, Calif.)
Beam: tie-No. 10 (9.944)

Brown concludes a record-setting 2021 campaign with some of the highest individual rankings and NQS in program history. Her tie for the No. 2 final ranking in the all-around is the highest a DU gymnast has ever been ranked – by season average or by NQS – and her NQS is the new program record.

Her final NQS on bars is also a new DU record while she was just .001 from tying the record on floor. Her vault NQS ties the fourth-highest in school history while her beam NQS finishes in the top 10 as well.

She is the first Denver gymnast to finish the season with three top-three rankings.

Vasquez has finished the year ranked in the top 10 in each of her first three collegiate seasons. Her NQS is now the second-highest in program history, sandwiched between her own marks from 2020 (9.960) and 2019 (9.935).
