Denver Drops 3-1 Match to Colorado

The Pioneers will close out non-conference play at San Diego next Saturday at 8 p.m. MT

DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer team rounded out its home non-conference schedule with a 3-1 loss to Colorado on Sunday afternoon at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.

Scoring Summary:
DEN (5-4-0):  Glover 6'
CU (5-3-0): Rosen 22', Hopcroft 28' (pen), Gonzalez 68'

Quotable: Head Coach Jeff Hooker
"I think we started very well. We found the spaces, we got where we needed to get to, and we figured out what was next. There was a lot of one or two touch going forward, and we were building with a lot of speed in the attack. We were safe and comfortable with the ball. If we played like we did the first 20 minutes for the entire afternoon, we'd of won the game.

"Our group has to understand that if they want to be as good as they think they are, we have to put a little more work in and have a lot higher level of concentration. They have to be willing to get better and it's going to take some work. We feel like we can be really good, but at the end of the day, we haven't gotten the results that we wanted. We have to have a willingness to improve and work on the fine points of the game, whether it be in the final third, on the counter attack or to stop carelessly giving balls away without pressure. If we can improve in those areas, I think we'll be able to get back to where we want to be as a team."

First Half:
Denver's Kaitlyn Glover broke the deadlock in the sixth minute, capping off great build-up play down the left with her fourth goal of the season. Sami Feller beat her defender to the endline and play her cross on the ground across the face of goal to Jadyn Goodrich just outside the six-yard box. Goodrich took the cross first time in the middle of the six-yard box to Glover, who knocked it into the open net to put the Pioneers ahead.

Colorado evened the score at 1-1 in the 22nd minute through Rachel Rosen's tally. Shanade Hopcroft found Tessa Barton in the middle of the field at the top of the box. Barton played it on to Rosen, who took a couple touches to her left and finished into the side netting inside the far post.

The Buffs flipped the scoreline around in the 28th with a spot kick from Hopcroft.

CU outshot the Pioneers 7-6 in the opening 45 and took the only corner kick of the first half.

Second Half:
Denver created a few good scoring chances in the opening stages of the second half, but weren't able to find the leveler.

In the 53rd minute, Natalie Beckman had her shot blocked in-front, and Sydney Sharp shot the rebound, but it was right at the keeper.

Colorado got the fourth goal of the match to double its advantage in the 68th minute. Hopcroft was the first to a bouncing ball and traveled with it to the endline. Hopcroft played it back to the run of Amaya Gonzalez, who had the far post picked out, but her shot was deflected by a Denver defender in-front of the six-yard box and it went into the near post side netting.
