DU Women’s Soccer Falls in Shootout Against Oral Roberts

Match finishes 0-0 after extra time; ORU advances 3-2 in PKs

DENVER – The University of Denver women's soccer team's 2022 season came to an end after losing a penalty shootout to Oral Roberts in the Summit League semifinals on Sunday.

DU and ORU played to a scoreless draw through the extra 20 minutes of halftime, forcing penalties to decide which team would advance to the final. ORU would go on to win the shootout 3-2.

COACH'S NOTES:
From head coach Jeff Hooker: "It's difficult. I'm proud of the way they fought. We didn't find out until five minutes prior to the game that Devan (McSwain) couldn't play, and no one batted an eye. It was just next-man-up, so I was really proud of how they performed. We created the chances, but we just didn't get the goal today; and we were just not quite as in-sync as what we were for the last couple weekends.

"More than anything else, I just wanted to thank the people who stood up and were brave to take the PKs. It's easy to push it off to someone else and not take the responsibility. We hadn't missed one through this year, so we felt good going in, but you leave it up to chance when you get it to there."

SIGNIFICANT STATS:
  • Freshman Audrey Miller made her first collegiate start in place of graduate student Devan McSwain, who was injured during warmups. Prior to Sunday, Miller had played just 32 career minutes.
  • Fellow freshman Lily O'Grady also played a career-high 49 minutes.
  • Denver held Oral Roberts without a shot in the first half and outshot ORU 13-4 overall
  • For the fourth time in 2022, DU did not allow a corner kick for its opponent.
  • DU finished 2022 with an 11-4-4 record, its sixth season in a row with double-digit wins.
