Three Pioneers Place in Top 10 in GS Qualifying Race at Copper Mountain

Senior Tobias Kogler led DU with a second-place finish in the men's race
COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. – Three Denver Pioneers skiers placed in the top 10 of the giant slalom on Thursday during a RMISA Alpine Qualifier event at Copper Mountain Resort.
There were no team scores recorded, as this was an individual qualifying event for the NCAA Championships.
Senior Tobias Kogler led the Denver men by picking up the silver for his second podium of the season, while freshman Cooper Cornelius came in 10th. On the women's side, junior Galena Wardle posted a sixth-place result while sophomore Nora Brand finished 13th.
Kogler has placed in the top 10 in each of the last six races this season and picked up his 18th career podium and 14th in the giant slalom. For Cornelius, he has now finished in the top 10 in all four GS races in 2022.
Kogler had the fastest first run at 52.82, but Utah's Joachim Lein bettered him in the afternoon to take over first place overall by just three-hundredths of a second. Westminster's Mikkel Solbakken joined them on the podium in third place.
Four other Pios took part in the men's race, as senior Simon Fournier placed 13th, senior Tristan Lane 20th, sophomore Trey Seymour 25th and junior Cole Puckett 30th.
Wardle's sixth-place result marked her fourth top 10 of the season and second in giant slalom. Brand's 13th place was a new personal best in the GS. Wardle posted the fifth-fastest first run, while Brand was fifth-fastest on the second time down the hill.
Senior Katie Hensien and junior Eleri Smart did not race on the women's side, while junior Colby Lane didn't compete in the men's GS.
Ainsley Proffitt of Colorado Mountain College won the women's GS. Westminster's Julia Toiviainen was second and Utah's Kaja Norbye was third.
UP NEXT: The teams will stay in Copper Mountain on Friday as the Pioneers-hosted Denver Invitational will begin with another day of giant slalom racing. The alpine-only meet will conclude on Monday with the slalom competition at nearby Keystone Resort.
