Kogler Wins GS at 2022 RMISA Championships, Seymour Places Third

Denver in second place after placing four men in the top 10 in a wild opening day of the conference championships
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – Four men on the University of Denver ski team finished in the top 10 in the giant slalom on Wednesday to help the Pioneers move into second place after the first day of the 2022 RMISA Championships.
Senior Tobias Kogler led DU by winning his third career conference title and earning his second straight GS victory as one of two Pios on the podium at Steamboat Springs Resort. Denver sophomore and local Trey Seymour moved up 25 spots from his first to second run to place third, marking the first time in his collegiate career on the stand. Utah's Oliver Parazette joined the Pioneer duo on the stage in second place.
Freshman Cooper Cornelius was the third Denver scorer in sixth, and another Steamboat Springs native, Cole Puckett, produced his best-ever finish in an NCAA giant slalom race by coming in eighth.
Junior Galena Wardle led the DU women by recording a top-10 result as well, tying for ninth with Westminster's Hannah Saethereng (1:58.85). Sophomore Nora Brand finished 17th and junior Eleri Smart came in 24th.
For Wardle, it was her fifth straight top 10 and seventh of the season.
The Pioneers' three scorers in the top six led them to win the men's team race and vaulted them into second place overall at the conference championships, which triples this year as the NCAA West Regional and the Spencer James Nelson Memorial Colorado Invitational. DU has 152 points and is just 12 behind leader Utah.
In the men's second run, the field nearly got turned upside down as the athletes that finished 17th to 29th in the opening run produced nine of the fastest times in the second session. Snow started falling at the beginning of the men's second run and got significantly heavier as it went along.
Seymour posted a mark of 55.71 in the first run before having the second-fastest second trek at 57.54. Puckett was 17th after the opening session but had the fifth-fastest second time at 58.26 to move himself into his second consecutive top 10 of the season.
Cornelius was 11th after the first run and had ninth-fastest second run at 58.57 to move up the leaderboard and into the top 10.
Alternately, only one skier in the top 10 after the first session posted a top-10 mark in the second as Utah's Wilhelm Normannseth posted the 10th quickest, thus opening the standings to the field.
Kogler was only a handful of athletes that were able to hold onto their position, as he led following the first run with a time of 53.57, just one of two skiers to post a sub-54-second run. He was 14th fastest in the second session at 58.71 but had already built enough of a lead while others around him dropped significantly to pick up his 11th career win.
Seymour's previous personal best was 12th at this year's Utah Invitational slalom on Jan. 25 and his previous best in GS was 17th at that same Utah meet. Puckett has now recorded consecutive top 10s for the first time in his career after placing fifth in slalom at the Denver Invitational on Monday.
Two other Pioneer men competed on Wednesday as Tristan Lane finished 23rd while Simon Fournier tied for 26th in the men's competition.
Westminster's Julia Toiviainen won the women's giant slalom and was joined on the podium by Colorado's Emma Hammergaard and Utah's Kaja Norbye.
UP NEXT: The alpine portion of the RMISA Championships wraps up on Thursday with slalom racing at Howelsen Hill Ski Area in Steamboat Springs. The Women's first run begins at 9 a.m., while the men start at 10 a.m. The second runs of the day are set for 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. MT.
