Flaschberger Wins Men's 10K Freestyle Pursuit at Nanook Invitational

Andreas Kirkeng places second; DU skiing finishes third at the Nordic-only meet
FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The University of Denver placed skiers in the top two spots on the podium in the men's race for the second straight day, and the Pioneers finished third overall as the Alaska Fairbanks Nanook Invitational concluded on Wednesday at Birch Hill Recreation Area.
Junior Bernhard Flaschberger won the men's 10-kilometer freestyle pursuit, crossing the line with a total time of 39:41.7. He quickly erased a 30-second deficit entering Wednesday and jumped over 11 other skiers to win his third race of the season and his second in freestyle. Flaschberger finished Tuesday's 5K classic in 12th place in 13:56, but he posted a swift time of 25:45.7 on Wednesday, the only skier to register a sub-26-minute performance.
Freshman Andreas Kirkeng joined Flaschberger on the podium in second place overall with a time of 39:41.7. He won Tuesday's classical in 13:22 and led the charge in the freestyle pursuit with his brother Ole Marius Kirkeng, who finished just two-hundredths of second behind the previous day.
Ole Marius came in fifth for his second-straight top-five result, while Andreas has now placed on the stand in three straight races dating back to the 15K classic at the Montana State Invitational on Jan. 16.
The Pioneers won the men's race for the second straight day, registering 106 points, but the team remained in third place in the overall meet standings. The DU women recorded 50 points in freestyle, giving Denver a grand total of 306 points in the two-day, Nordic-only meet.
DU finished 34.5 points behind winner Colorado (340.5), which ended Utah's two-plus years of dominance in Nordic, at least for one meet. The last time that the Utes, who finished second just 1.5 points behind, didn't win a Nordic event was at the 2019 New Mexico Invitational.
In the women's 10K freestyle pursuit, junior Vera Norli was able to move up two spots to finish 11th with a 51:04.09 total time. Sophomore Hanna Ray (16th) and senior Sadie Cotton (20th) were the other two scorers for the Denver.
Five other Pioneers competed on Wednesday, with Sidney Barbier coming in 22nd and Gracie Shanley placing 29th in the women's race. On the men's side, Elijah Weenig was 21st, Jonah Steinberg was 22nd and Nick Sweeney was 29th.
Utah's Sydney Palmer-Leger earned her second straight victory and fifth of the season by winning the women's race, while Alaska Fairbanks' Kendall Kramer was second and Colorado's Hanna Abrahamsson was third. CU's Will Koch joined Flaschberger and Kirkeng on the podium in third place in the men's 10K.
UP NEXT: The Pioneers will stay in Fairbanks through the weekend where they will compete in races as part of the Besh Cup at Birch Hill, with the collegiate results being pulled to serve as the Nordic portion of the RMISA Invitational. The 5K/10K freestyle is Saturday, while the 10K classic is on Sunday
