PREVIEW: Denver Opens League Play at Omaha Friday

The Pioneers’ second stage of the 2023-24 season begins with two games this weekend

DENVER  – The University of Denver men's basketball program will open Summit League play on Friday night with a visit to Omaha inside Baxter Arena. Tip is set for 7 p.m. CT/6 p.m. MT and can be streamed live on the Summit League Network and 104.3 The Fan HD3.

SERIES HISTORY:
Omaha holds a 12-10 edge in the series history in the modern Division I era. The Mavs hold a 7-2 record over the Pioneers in Omaha, with Denver's last Nebraska win coming in February of 2016 by a count of 75-72. The two programs split the season series a year ago. Omaha won he December meeting 83-66 on its home floor before the Pioneers returned the favor in February by a count of 72-61 in Hamilton.

DOUBLE DIGIT WORKLOAD:
Tommy Bruner
leads the Pioneers with 85 career games in double figures, including 15-straight contests spanning back to the end of last season. Touko Tainamo is the next closest Pioneer with 39 games in double figures, including in 10 of the 13 games for Denver this season. 

100 GAMES PLAYED:
Both fifth-year guard Tommy Bruner and graduate student transfer Jaxon Brenchley have crossed the century mark in games played in their NCAA career this season.

LAST TIME OUT:
Prior to the Christmas break, Denver defeated Northern New Mexico 90-57 inside Hamilton. Tommy Bruner led the way with 22, Touko Tainamo chipped in 21 and Tyson Garff finished in double figures for the first time in his career with 13.

BRUNER LEADS DENVER IN NATIONAL STATISTICS RANKINGS:

ranks first in the country in points per game (24.2), third in free-throws made (91), sixth in field goals made (95), 54th in three-point field goal percentage (40.7) and 59th in three-pointers made per game (2.54). Touko Tainamo ranks 21st in free-throw attempts (85) and 20th in free-throws made (66). Jaxon Brenchley is eighth in the country in assist/turnover ratio (4.2). Denver entered Wednesday sixth in the country in free-throw attempts per game (27.1) and third in free-throw makes per game (20.5). As a team, the Pioneers are 33rd in scoring offense (83.5), 70th in rebounds per game (39.38) and eighth in turnovers per game (9.2).

UP NEXT:
Denver will return home to round out the opening weekend of Summit League play on Sunday when the Pioneer welcome Oral Roberts to Hamilton Gymnasium. Tip on New Year's Eve is set for 3 p.m. MT, and will be broadcast on Altitude, the Summit League Network and 104.3 The Fan HD3.
