DENVER – Five members of the University of Denver triathlon team have been named Scholar All-Americans by the Collegiate Triathlon Coaches Association.
Graduate student
Melissa Funes, sophomore
Freya McKinley and sophomore
Clara Normand all earned First-Team Scholar All-American honors by producing a 3.5 grade-point average and finishing in the top 20 at the Collegiate National Championships. McKinley placed 12th, Normand came in 17th and Funes finished in 19th in the race on Nov. 12 in Tempe, Arizona.
Freshman
Elizabeth Harita (22nd) and sophomore
Avarie Faulkner (37th) were recognized as Scholar All-American Honorable Mentions for also producing a 3.5 GPA but placing outside of the top 20 at nationals.
As a team, the Pioneers finished with 3.67 combined GPA during the fall quarter and earned recognition as a CTCA Scholar American Team (3.2 team GPA or higher).
In its second full season, DU triathlon team earned race wins at the Southern Hills Triathlon in Hot Springs, South Dakota, and Bearathlon in Berkeley, California, and finished third at the national championships.
