Denver Men Improve 10 Spots to 10th on Final Day of CSCAA NICs

Distance swimmers, diving scores from NCAA Zones, give Denver men a boost in final team standings

ELKHART, Ind. – University of Denver men's and women's swimmers closed out the 2023 CSCAA National Invitational Championships on Saturday night at the Beacon Health Aquatic Center.

Denver's men moved up 10 spots to crack the top-10 after an impressive final day of competition for the Pioneers. The Pioneer women finished in 13th, making Denver one of seven programs to have both its men's and women's teams in the top-13.

The CSCAA NICs scored both the 1000 free and 1650 free from the same mile swim on Saturday. Kieran Watson and Joe Hancock took third and fourth respectively in the men's 1000 with times of 9:17.66 and 9:20.57. Nika Spehar was scored 18th in the women's 1000.

Watson went on to finish fifth in the full mile with a time of 15:21.22. Hancock reached the final wall in eighth in 15:33.39. Spehar timed the mile in 16:52.28 to finish 16th for the Denver women.

In the first individual final with a corresponding preliminary event on Friday morning, Dylan Wright finished sixth in the men's 200 back with a time of 1:44.90.

Erika Remington improved two spots in the women's 100 free from this morning's prelims, taking 16th in 50.25.

Alex Lynch reached the wall in eighth in the 200 breast with his time of 1:57.85. Marco Nosack finished 19th in 1:59.79, the only double scoring event for the Pioneers (that had a prelims session) this weekend.

Jessica Maeda matched her qualifying spot with a fifth place finish in the women's 200 breast, clocking in at 2:13.70.

Brandon Chapman and Dan Kunin both swam in the A-Final of the 200 fly, finishing fifth (1:45.42) and 10th (1:48.51), respectively.

Denver's women capped off the weekend with a ninth-place finish in the 400 free relay. Ines Marin, Megan Lucyshyn, Maeda and Remington combined for a time of 3:22.66 in the event.

Up Next: Natalie Arky will represent Denver at the 2023 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships from March 15-18. Arky is scheduled to swim in the 100 fly, 100 back and 200 back.
