DENVER – University of Denver gymnastics alumna
Lynnzee Brown will compete at the 2023 Artistic World Gymnastics Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, on Monday, October 2.
Brown, who represents Haiti, will compete in Subdivision 7 of 10 of the women's qualification, set for 4:15 p.m. local time/8:15 a.m. MT on Monday. The former Denver gymnast is chasing an individual all-around berth to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
To qualify for the Paris Olympics, Brown must finish in the top 14 in the final all-around standings – excluding athletes who have already qualified for the 2024 Olympics by way of team berths – after qualification is complete on October 2.
During Monday's qualifiying meet, Brown will rotate with All-Around Group 10, which also features athletes from Greece and Slovakia, and the group will begin on vault. Also in Subdivision 7 are the teams from Austria and Canada, as well as All-Around Group 5, which includes athletes from Ukraine and Barbados.
Brown will also have the opportunity to advance to the all-around and/or individual event finals in Antwerp based on her performance in qualification. The top 24 all-arounders and the top eight athletes on each event – maximum two per country – at the end of qualification will advance to the finals, set for October 5-8.
Should Brown not advance to the Olympics in Antwerp, there are limited additional routes through the 2023 Pan American Games (October 21 – November 4 in Santiago, Chile) or the 2024 World Cup Series.
The Raytown, Missouri, native concluded her six-year career at the University of Denver with a program-record fourth-place finish in the all-around at the 2023 NCAA National Championships. She left DU as one of the most decorated gymnasts in program history, winning an NCAA national title on floor in 2019 and four Big 12 Conference championships including in the all-around in 2021. In total, she accumulated 20 WCGA All-American honors during her collegiate career and set Denver records for all-around score (39.825) and most career perfect 10.0s (five).
A month after her collegiate career ended, Brown made her international elite debut when she competed at the 2023 Pan American Championships in Medellin, Colombia, on May 27. She finished 17
th in the all-around with a 48.100, which qualified her for the World Championships.
Three Denver gymnasts have qualified for the Olympic Games: Jessica Lopez (Venezuela: 2008, 2012, 2016), Simona Castro (Chile: 2012, 2016, 2020) and Annamari Maaranen (Finland: 2012, did not compete).
