Cooper Cornelius won first career race as the Pioneers had 13 top-15 finishes in a busy alpine and Nordic day in Steamboat
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – The Denver Pioneers ski team had two individual wins and recorded seven total top-10 finishes on Friday in a busy day of alpine and Nordic racing at the 2024 Spencer James Nelson Colorado Invitational.
The Pioneers had 13 top-15 finishers overall to take second place at the halfway point of the meet with 327 points, trailing leader and host Colorado by just 23.5 points (350.5). Utah is third with 285.5 points and Montana State is also within 100 points of the lead heading into the final day of action with 261 points.
DU was led by a pair of upperclassmen in juniors Cooper Cornelius and Andreas Kirkeng, who both reached the top step in their respective disciplines and were among five Pios with a podium finish. Cornelius led Denver in the men's giant slalom at Steamboat Resort's Mount Werner to earn his first career victory, while Kirkeng picked up his second win of the season in the men's interval 7.5-kilometer freestyle across town at Howelsen Hill Ski Area.
Cornelius's first-ever win was in fairly-dominant fashion as he took gold in the GS by 79-hundredths of a second with a total time of 1:55.1, while Kirkeng picked up his ninth victory of his career by completing the 7.5K course in 19:35.2. Both Pioneers have been consistent this year with Cornelius earning top 10s in all three giant slalom events and Kirkeng owning four podiums and placing in the top seven in all six Nordic races of 2024.
Overall, Pioneers finished first and second in both the men's alpine and Nordic events. Senior Trey Seymour had a career-best result in second at 1:56.30 in GS, while graduate student Florian Knopf picked up the silver and his third runner-up placement of the season by clocking in at 19:43.4 in the cross-country skate.
Denver's men's Nordic squad had each of its three scorers in the top 10 as freshman Krystof Zatloukal also had a career day with a personal best in 10th. Sophomore Micah Steinberg was 20th, and junior Jonah Steinberg placed 22nd.
Women's alpine sophomore Sara Rask was Denver's fifth podium-getter on Friday by coming in third in giant slalom in what was a tightly-contested race. Each of the top three finishers were within a tenth of a second of each other; Rask timed at 1:51.12 to earn her fifth top 10 and first time on the stage this year.
Senior Nora Brand came in 13th in the women's alpine and sophomore Josephine Trueblood also scored for the Pioneers in 30th.
DU's men's alpine unit had another solid day on the hill, as each of the five finishers were in the top 15. Sophomore Adrian Minde Hunshammer scored in 12th, fellow classmate Thomas Hoffman was 13th and freshman Christian Soevik placed 15th. Sophomore Jack Bowers did not finish his first run.
Senior Hanna Ray led the Pioneers in the women's 7.5K freestyle and earned her second career top-five result in fifth place with a time of 23:21.4. She previously came in fifth earlier in the year in the season-opening 10K classical at the Westminster Invitational on Jan. 2.
Graduate student Henriette Saeterdal Semb and sophomore Selma Andersen were DU's other two scorers in the women's Nordic race in 11th and 12th, respectively. Junior Sidney Barbier grabbed her first top 20 of the season and seventh of her career in 19th, while freshman Maja Moland placed 24th and fellow classmate Anna Espeli was 35th.
Host CU joined Denver with a consistent day across the board to climb to the top of the standings after four-of-eight events. The Buffaloes had 13 finishers in the top 10, including all 12 scorers.
Colorado won both individual women's races, as Anna-Maria Dietze was victorious in the Nordic 7.5K freestyle while Magdalena Luczak garnered gold in the giant slalom.
The Pioneers were without women's alpine skiers Mia Hunt and Liv Moritz as they are competing at the FIS Alpine Junior World Championships in France. Elijah Weenig of men's Nordic also didn't race in preparation for the FIS Nordic World Under-23 Championships in Slovenia from Feb. 6-11.
UP NEXT: The Colorado Invite concludes on Saturday with another full day of alpine and Nordic races at Howelsen Hill Ski Area. Women's and men's 20K classic begins the day at 10 a.m. MT and 11:30 a.m. MT, while the afternoon is reserved for the alpine slalom competition. The first run is at 1:30 p.m.. MT while the second run is set for 6 p.m. MT under the lights of Howelsen Hill.
The Denver Invitational kicks off on Monday and Tuesday with a pair of alpine slalom races at Loveland Ski Area. The DU Nordic competition is Feb. 9-10 at Maloit Park in Minturn, Colorado.
