Denver Travels to St. Thomas for Regular Season Finale

The Pioneers look for regular season sweep over UST for the second time in three years

DENVER  – The University of Denver men's basketball team will wrap-up the 2023-24 regular season on Saturday when the Pioneers travel to St. Thomas. Tip on the Summit League Network and 104.3 The Fan HD3 is set for 7 p.m. CT/6 p.m. MT.

SERIES HISTORY:
Denver holds a 3-2 series lead. The Pioneer swept the regular season series in 2021-22, while the Tommies earned a sweep a year ago. Denver won the series opener 94-77 in Hamilton on February 10.

LAST TIME OUT:
Tommy Bruner
scored a game-high 31 points, but the Pioneers fell to Kansas City 84-69 on Senior Night Thursday.  

BRUNER LEADS DENVER IN NATIONAL STATISTICAL RANKINGS

  • Tommy Bruner ranks first in the country in points per game (25.3), seventh in free-throws made (199), first in field goals made (243), 68th in assists (130) and 64th in three-point field goals made (75).
  • Touko Tainamo ranks 56th in rebounds (244), 84th in free-throw attempts (154), 97th in free-throws made (115) and 85th in field goals made (174). Tainamo is also tied for 69th nationally in double-doubles with eight.
  • Isaiah Carr ranks 33rd in the country in blocked shots (56).
  • Denver entered the week 10th in the country in free-throw attempts per game (24.4) and 8th in free-throw makes per game (18.1) and 83rd in three-point field goal percentage (35.9).
  • As a team, the Pioneers are also 14th in scoring offense (83.4) and 45th in turnovers per game (10.2).

CAREER RECORDS: POINTS: Bruner 10th (1268), 39 behind Nate Rohnert (1307). Tainamo 14th (1073), 27 behind Rob Lewis for 13th. FREE THROWS: Bruner is 2nd with 345, 36 behind Nate Rohnert for the record. REBOUNDS: Tainamo is 4th (612), 14 behind Wahhab Carter for 3rd. 

SINGLE SEASON: POINTS: Tommy Bruner passed Yemi Nicholson (2005-06) for the modern DI record in a season on Feb. 8 at South Dakota. On Feb. 16 vs. North Dakota, Bruner passed Matt Teahan (1978-79) for the all-time record. Bruner sits at 760. FIELD GOALS: Bruner is 1st (243), passing Yemi Nicholson on Feb. 29 vs. Kansas City. FREE THROWS: Bruner broke Nate Rohnert's record on Feb. 1 and currently sits at 199 (Rohnert - 09-10, 157). Bruner is 1 FTM behind Vince Boryla (1948-49) for the all-time record. REBOUNDS: Tainamo has 244 boards for T-4th-most, 17 behin Yemi Nicholson (2004-05) for 3rd. ASSISTS: Bruner has 130 dimes for 7th, 1 behind Jake Pemberton (2016-17) for 6th. BLOCKS: Isaiah Carr became the fourth different Pio to record 50 blocks in a season, currently sitting at 56, good for seventh-highest in a season, 10 blocks behind Eric Dow (1998-99) for 6th.

Denver and the rest of the league will head to Sioux Falls next weekend for the 2024 Summit League Men's and Women's Basketball Championships. The tournament begins on Friday, March 8 with the play-in games.
