No. 21 Denver Gymnastics Hosts BYU for Big 12 Competition

DU set for annual Pink Meet in rare Saturday night home meet

WHO: No. 21 Denver vs. BYU
WHAT: Denver's annual Pink Meet
WHERE: Magness Arena (Denver, Colo.)
WHEN: Saturday, February 8, at 6:45 p.m. MT

MEET THEME:
Saturday is DU's annual Pink Meet to raise awareness for multiple cancer causes including breast cancer. Fans are encouraged to join the team in wearing pink to the meet, and pink pom poms will be available for the first 500 fans in the building.

The competition's presenting sponsor, CommonSpirit, will also provide resources and tips in support of the cause.

LAST TIME OUT:
Denver hit the road for the first time in Big 12 Conference competition on Friday, January 31, visiting then-No. 20 Arizona. DU placed second with a 194.600, though the team hit its highest bars score since the season opener (49.275). Graduate student Bella Mabanta nearly tied her career high on vault with a 9.875 that gave her the outright event title – the first of her career on the event. Sophomore Madison Ulrich matched her personal best on beam and tied for second overall with a 9.875. Graduate student Rylie Mundell posted her best all-around performance so far this year, scoring a 39.325 to tie for second.

EYE ON THE RANKINGS:
DU sits at No. 21 in the Week 5 Road to Nationals rankings and continues to rank in the top 15 nationally on vault and bars. The team moved up one spot on bars this week to No. 7 and adds a No. 14 ranking on vault.

No Denver gymnasts are ranked in the top 25 this week, though five are within a quarter tenth of doing so on at least one event. On bars alone, three DU gymnasts are .015 or less from the top 25: junior Kiley Rorich (.003 away), Mundell (.010) and Ulrich (.015). Sophomore Maddison Reidenbach and junior Cecilia Cooley are each about a quarter tenth from national rankings on vault and floor, respectively.

QUICK HITS:
  • Denver is expecting one of its largest crowds of the season on Saturday night, and fans are encouraged to secure their tickets in advance.
    • DU has already set one notable attendance record in the 2025 season with its largest crowd for a season opener in program history (5,071 on January 5 against Michigan).
    • Denver has been a part of the national trend of attendance records in collegiate gymnastics, especially over the last five seasons and peaking with the program's highest average (4,712) and total attendance (23,562) in 2024.
  • Saturday is DU's third Big 12 Conference meet of the year and its second at home.
    • Denver owns a win at home over West Virginia but dropped its meet at Arizona.
    • DU still has trips to Utah and Iowa State in February before closing Big 12 competition at home against Arizona State on March 9.
  • After winning two titles against West Virginia on January 31, Mundell now owns 40 career titles and is four away from moving into Denver's top 10 all-time.
  • Denver Gymnastics joins the entire University of Denver community in honoring the life of Chancellor Emeritus Daniel L. Ritchie, who passed away on January 30.
    • A moment of silence will be held before the start of the meet on Saturday in remembrance of Ritchie.
    • Ritchie was an immense supporter of DU Athletics. Among is many accomplishments was helping lead the University's transition to full Division-I status in 1999, which was the same year that the Daniel L. Ritchie Center for Sports & Wellness opened.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS:
BYU finished January with a home tri meet against Southern Utah and UC Davis on January 31, placing second with a 195.600. BYU gymnasts won at least a share of three event titles in the meet, led by Kylie Eaquinto on vault and bars. Brynlee Andersen also tied atop the floor standings.

Denver holds a 36-24 all-time record against BYU including three consecutive wins. The teams last met at the 2024 Big 12 Gymnastics Championship in Norman, Okla., where DU placed second (197.975) and BYU third (197.050). This will be BYU's first trip to Denver since February 22, 2020, where the Cougars won over an injury-depleted DU squad, 196.200-195.175. In the team's last regular-season meeting, DU tallied a 196.900-196.500 win in Provo on February 23, 2024.
