CLERMONT, Fla. – Sophomore
Alex Campbell won her second career race with the University of Denver women's triathlon team on Saturday morning in the under-25 elite development race on day 1 of the 2025 Clermont Challenge at Lake Louisa State Park.
Returning to the site of last fall's Collegiate National Championship, the Pioneers took the top two spots of the podium in the first women's EDR race of the weekend, with sophomore
Maira Carreau placing second behind her teammate and fellow Canadian.
The win in 1:02:42 was the first sprint triathlon of Campbell's collegiate career, as her previous victory came in the Aquathlon Eliminator duel against Colorado Mesa on Sept. 2, 2023. The Kingston, Ontario, native was the first athlete out of the water with a 10:44 split in the 750-meter swim, held her position through the 20-kilometer bike before posting the fastest 5K run of her career and the second-fastest in program history at 17:23.
Carreau clocked in at 1:02:56 and ran a 17:43 in the 5K, her own second-fastest mark and trailing only her school record 17:06 set at the 2023 Eastern Regional at Smith Mountain Lake.
Junior
Elizabeth Harita finished 15th in 1:05:14 while freshman
Beatrice Normand had a planned DNF after the bike portion. Normand had a time of 45:14 in the swim-bike portion, including posting the sixth-fastest bike split in 31:42.
Additionally, two incoming 2025 freshmen had top-20 performances, as
Jenna Topott finished seventh (1:04:23) and
Lucrezia Gowdy was 18th (1:05:36).
The Pioneers have competed at the Clermont Challenge in each of their five seasons of existence, including their first-ever races on March 6-7, 2021.
WHAT'S NEXT: Denver will have several of its athletes take part in either a second EDR sprint race or the NCAA super sprint on Sunday on the final day of the Clermont Challenge. The Pioneers continue their sprint season at the Americas Cup Miami at Homestead Miami Speedway later this month on March 28
THE COURSE: The swim was a one-lap, lollipop course around six buoys on the course before running on the dock to transition. The bike was a four-lap loop on Lake Louisa State Park's main road that featured several hills and a 180-degree turnaround. The run is a two-lap out-and-back that follows the same course as the bike.
