Five-race slate begins Labor Day weekend, set for Desert's Edge in Grand Junction on Sept. 27
DENVER – The University of Denver women's triathlon team announced today its 2026 regular-season schedule with the five-meet campaign beginning for the third straight season at the Southern Hills Triathlon in Hot Springs, South Dakota.
Overall, the 2026 slate has similar feel to the 2025 schedule, as the Pioneers will race at four of the same events.
The super sprint race at Southern Hills has become a Labor Day weekend tradition in collegiate triathlon as Denver and other western squads kick off the season at Angostura State Recreation Area on Saturday, Sept. 5. DU raced in the super sprint in both 2024 and 2025 and won the full sprint event in its first visit to the Black Hills in 2022.
Denver then returns to Highline State Park near Grand Junction for the Desert's Edge Triathlon on Sunday, Sept. 27. The Pioneers raced at the Colorado western slope fixture for the first time in 2025. This will be the fourth time that the Pios will compete in a full sprint race in their home state, as they also competed at both the 2021 and 2022 Oktoberfest Triathlon in Longmont. Denver has also hosted two aquathlon events on the DU campus in its history.
The following weekend, the Pioneers head east to the banks of the Chesapeake Bay in Annapolis, Maryland, for the first time in their history, as they take part in the inaugural Navy Collegiate Cup.
Denver's postseason begins with the Western Regional Championships on Oct. 18 at Marine Creek Reservoir in Fort Worth, Texas. DU will be racing on the course hosted by Texas Christian University for the third straight campaign. Regionals were also at hosted at the venue in 2025 where the Pios finished in a season-best fourth.
The 2026 campaign culminates with the Collegiate National Championships in Tempe, Arizona, on Sunday, Nov. 8. The college nationals return to Tempe Town Lake for the second straight year, and this will be the eighth time in the last 10 seasons that Arizona State will host the event. Denver senior Maira Carreau won the individual national championship at the venue as a freshman in 2023.
NCAA programs compete in sprint-distance draft-legal triathlons, which usually features a 750-meter swim (0.47 miles), 20-kilometer bike ride (12.4 miles) and 5K run (3.1 miles) with transitions in-between each stage. Super sprint races tend to be half of the distances of the sprints and are completed in half the time (around 30 minutes).
