Pioneers Open 2026 Triathlon Season in South Dakota

Denver begins campaign at Southern Hills Triathlon for the third straight year
HOT SPRINGS, S.D. – The University of Denver women's triathlon team kicks off its 2026 season on Saturday morning at the Southern Hills Triathlon super sprint at Angostura State Recreation Area.
The collegiate race begins at 7:15 a.m. MT, with the super-sprint format featuring a 375-meter swim, 10-kilometer bike and 5K run on the east side of the reservoir.
The Southern Hills Triathlon has become a season opening and Labor Day weekend tradition for the Pioneers, as they get set to race on the course in the Black Hills for the third straight year. They finished fifth in the super sprint last year and placed second as a team in 2024. DU also kicked off the 2022 campaign in the full sprint race at Southern Hills and went on to sweep the podium.
The collegiate course will be the same as in previous years, beginning with a running start off Breakers Beach and into a one-lap swim in Angostura Reservoir. The bike portion features an out-and-back course through and out of the state park that includes several steep hills and tight turns with the college competitors turning around after 5 kilometers. The run is another out and back that heads south out of transition and along the eastern shore of the lake and features several hills.
All nine of Denver's student-athletes are expected to race with graduate student Coco Reed and freshmen Lucy Eggleston and Samantha Perry set to make their collegiate triathlon debuts and junior Rebecca Nolan taking part in her first race as a Pioneer after transferring from Wingate in the offseason. DU has five returners in senior Maira Carreau and sophomores Lucrezia Gowdy, Mia Stanley-Hunt, Jenna Topott and Olivia Wimberger.
Among the western Division-I programs that are also expected to race this weekend are Arizona State, San Francisco, South Dakota and TCU.
The first full sprint distance of the season for the Pioneers is later this month at the Desert's Edge Triathlon at Highline State Park near Grand Junction on Sept. 27.
