Maira Carreau Finishes Third at 2026 Southern Hills Triathlon

Pioneers open the season with a fourth-place team finish in the super sprint
HOT SPRINGS, S.D. – Senior Maira Carreau led the Denver Pioneers with a third-place finish on Saturday morning at the season-opening Southern Hills Triathlon super sprint at Angostura State Recreation Area.
It was the ninth career podium for Carreau as she clocked in at 31:13 and finished 22 seconds behind winner Sidney Clement of Arizona State (30:51). TCU's Julia Visgueiro bested Carreau to the finish line by three seconds to earn second place (31:10).
Carreau was in the lead pack for the entire race and posted personal-best splits in the super sprint distances. She was third out of the water following the 375-meter swim at 5:43, had the ninth-fastest 10K bike time at 16:00 and finished the 2.5K run in 9:03—fourth best on the day.
Denver finished fourth as a team with 236 points. Arizona State won the overall title with 318 points while TCU was second (290) and San Francisco was third (268). South Dakota finished behind DU in fifth (208), while Division-II's Colorado Mesa was sixth (204) and Black Hills State came in seventh (122).
Jenna Topott was the Pioneers' second finisher in 27th at 34:02 (6:17/16:30/10:30) while fellow sophomore Lucrezia Gowdy was 33rd in 34:02 (6:17/6:30/10:30). Junior Rebecca Nolan came in 38th with a time of 34:40 (6:20/17:29/10:08) while making her Denver debut after transferring from Wingate in the offseason, and sophomore Olivia Wimberger was the Pioneers' fifth scorer in 42nd with a total time of 35:00.
Graduate student Coco Reed used a 10:02 mark in the 2.5K run to move up to 44th and finish in 35:30 in her collegiate debut (6:22/18:19/10:02). Freshmen Lucy Eggleston was 45th in 35:53 (6:40/17:35/10:59) and Samantha Perry was 51st in 36:36 (6:33/17:36/11:38) in their first NCAA triathlons. Sophomore Mia Stanley-Hunt did not finish the bike portion.
The Pioneers were racing in the super sprint at the Southern Hills Triathlon for the third straight season, as they also opened the season at the event near the Black Hills of South Dakota in 2024 and 2025. Overall, this was the fourth time that DU competed at Southern Hills as they took part in the full sprint to begin the 2022 campaign.
WHAT'S NEXT: Denver now gets ready for its first full sprint distance of the season at the Desert's Edge Triathlon on Sunday, Sept. 27 at Highline State Park in Loma, Colorado. This is the second straight year that DU will be competing in their home state and racing at the popular annual race in the Grand Junction area.
THE COURSE: Beginning with a running start off Breakers Beach, the swim was one lap of approximately 375 meters in Angostura Reservoir. No wet suits were required. The 10K bike portion featured an out-and-back course through and out of the state recreation area that included several steep hills and tight turns with the college competitors turning around after 5K. The run was another out-and-back that headed south out of transition along a paved walking path that went along the eastern shore of the lake and featured several hills.
WEATHER: The air temperature at the 7:19 a.m. MT start was 69 degrees Fahrenheit and got to the mid-to-late 70s by the end of the race. There were sunny conditions with little cloud cover.
