Lucrezia Gowdy paces Denver individually in 17th

LOMA, Colo. – The Denver Pioneers women's triathlon team raced in its home state on Sunday and finished fourth at the Desert's Edge Collegiate Cup at Highline State Park.

DU was led individually by sophomore Lucrezia Gowdy, who finished in 17th with a total time of 1:06:00 (10:48/32:28/21:10). It was her second career top-20 finish in a regular season meet, as she placed 16th in last year's Prairie State Cup in DeWitt, Illinois.

Three other Pioneers placed in the top 30 with fellow second-year triathletes Jenna Topott in 22nd (1:07:06) and Mia Stanley-Hunt in 24th (1:07:35) and junior Rebecca Nolan in 28th (1:08:01). Graduate student Coco Reed was DU's fifth scorer and just outside the top 30 in 31st (1:08:41).

Freshman Lucy Eggleston came in 36th (1:10:37) and sophomore Olivia Wimberger in 41st (1:12:57). Rookie Samantha Perry did not finish after not completing the bike portion.

Senior captain Maira Carreau did not race this weekend as she was representing Canada at the World Triathlon U23 Championships where she placed 15th individually on Friday in Pontevedra, Spain.

Arizona's Molly Lakustiak won the individual title at the Desert's Edge in 1:02:29. San Francisco's Kjara Rechmann was second (1:02:43) while U of A's Ruth Pardy was third (1:02:45).

Texas Christian University won the team competition with 298 after each of its five scorers finished in the top 20. Arizona was second with 285 points and San Francisco was third (221). DU recorded 218 points in fourth place and finished 12 points ahead of Arizona State (206).

WHAT'S NEXT: Denver now gets set for the second of back-to-back race weekends as the Pioneers travel to the Chesapeake for the inaugural Navy Collegiate Cup in Annapolis, Maryland, next Sunday, Oct. 4. The race begins at 6:10 a.m. MT/8:10 a.m. ET.

THE COURSE: Beginning with a one-lap, triangular swim of 750 meters around two buoys on the south side of Highline Lake, the competitors then transitioned near the campground and onto the bike portion—a two-lap rectangular loop out of the park and to the south. The cyclists went south on 11 8/10 Road before going west on Q Road. They then headed north on 10 Road before making their way over to R Road via Q 3/4 Road. After the second lap, the racers re-entered the campground and transitioned for the run—a one-lap trek that is an out-and-back along the lake's edge from the southeast corner over to the east end and heading north. The 5K run finished across the dam on the southern edge of the reservoir and back to the transition area near the campground.

WEATHER: The air temperature at the 7:35 a.m. MT start was 53 degrees Fahrenheit and staying in the 50s throughout the race. There were mostly sunny conditions with little cloud cover.
