Triathlon grad student places 12th, team finishes sixth in race that was changed to a duathlon
By: Ron Knabenbauer
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Graduate student Coco Reed led the Denver Pioneers women's triathlon team on Sunday morning with a 12th-place finish at the inaugural Navy Collegiate Cup.
Â
Reed's finish was a career best as she completed the duathlon race on the U.S. Naval Academy grounds with a total time of 1:01:33.6. She ran the ninth-fastest 5K at the end of the race with a mark of 17:41, which was also the fourth-quickest in program history.
Â
Due to water conditions, the organizers made the decision late in the week to change the sprint triathlon to a duathlon, switching out the 750-meter swim at the start to a 2.5K run instead. It was the first time that the Pioneers had competed in a duathlon in program history.
Â
Junior Rebecca Nolan placed 20th for DU while freshman Lucy Eggleston ended up 35th. Rookie Samantha Perry in 46th and sophomore Olivia Wimberger in 52nd rounded out Denver's finishers. The Pioneers' Maira Carreau, Lucrezia Gowdy, Mia Stanley-Hunt and Jenna Topott did not race.
Â
TCU won the team event with 286 points, eight more than second-place Duquesne (278), while San Francisco (227) edged host Navy (226) by a single point to take the third spot. Denver finished sixth as a squad with 160 points.
Â
Duquesne's Daria Ermolova won the individual event in 58:23.2, while USF's Tallulah Wright was second (59:56.0) and Delaware State's Rebecca Jansen was third (1:00:20.3)
Â
WHAT'S NEXT: Denver now prepares for postseason competition with the Western Regional Championships at Marine Creek Reservoir in Fort Worth, Texas on Sunday, Oct. 18. The 2026 season concludes with the Collegiate National Championships on Sunday, Nov. 8 at Tempe Town Lake in Tempe, Arizona.
Â
THE COURSE: Originally set to be an in-water start with a one-lap swim of 750 meters in College Creek on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy, the race began with a 2.5-kilometer run along the run course instead due to water conditions. Out of transitions, the competitors did one lap near the athletic facilities off Severn River. The bike was four laps of 19 kilometers and went along the road on the water's edge near the athletic fields and river. The run followed the same route as the start but was two laps to total 5K.
Â
WEATHER: The air temperature at the 8 a.m. ET start was 63 degrees Fahrenheit. There were cloudy and damp conditions, as a slight rain fell throughout the race.
