Denver Triathlon finishes fifth as a team

By: Ron Knabenbauer

FORT WORTH, Texas – Senior Maira Carreau finished on the podium in third place on Sunday morning for the Denver Pioneers triathlon team at the 2026 Western Regional Championships at Marine Creek Reservoir.

Carreau picked up her second podium in as many races this season as she also came in third in the season-opening Southern Hills Triathlon Super Sprint on Sept. 5. It was the 10th-podium finish of her career, as the La Prairie, Quebec, native posted a total time of 1:03:16.87 on the day.

Defending national champion Kelly Wetteland of Arizona won the individual regional title by clocking in at 1:03:06.44 while Arizona State's and Carreau's fellow countrywoman Sidney Clement of Canada just beat her to the line to finish runner-up in 1:03:14.08.

Carreau was seventh out of the water following the 750-meter swim (10:19) and used the sixth-fastest bike split in the 20-kilometer ride (33:58) to remain in the lead pack going into the last leg. The Pioneers team captain's 5K run was third-fastest in the race at 17:33, with only Wetteland (17:21) and Clement (17:24) being quicker.

DU sophomores Jenna Topott in 38th (11:01/35:30/20:17) and Mia Stanley-Hunt in 44th (10:47/37:17/19:45) were the squad's second and third scorers. Graduate student Coco Reed placed 53rd (11:18/37:40/19:56) and junior Rebecca Nolan was the Pioneers fifth scorer in 57th (11:01/37:42/20:43). Freshman Lucy Eggleston came in 61st (11:39/1:18/36:19/0:31/21:41), sophomore Olivia Wimberger placed 70th (11:02/36:25/24:57) and rookie Samantha Perry was 92nd (11:25/39:52/28:28).

Arizona had four of its scorers place in the top 10 and won the team regional championship with 744 points, while Arizona State was just five points behind in second place (739). Host Texas Christian came in third with 704 points.

Denver finished with fifth by registering 614 points, finishing behind fourth-place San Francisco (661) and ahead of South Dakota (578) in the D-I results.

WHAT'S NEXT: The Pioneers now prepare the Collegiate National Championships to conclude the 2026 campaign in three weeks on Sunday, Nov. 8 at Tempe Town Lake in Tempe, Arizona.

THE COURSE: Beginning with an in-water start, the competitors began the race with a one-lap triangular swim of 750 meters in the reservoir before leaving the water from the east side of the lake and running up a hill to transition. The 20K bike course was four laps through adjacent Tarrant County College and along Marine Creek Parkway, featuring several technical portions that were narrow with tight turns. The 5K run was on a two-lap course on the campus that ran parallel to most of the bike route.

WEATHER: The air temperature at the 11 a.m. CT start was 51 degrees Fahrenheit with sunny conditions throughout the race.
