Denver triathlon set for inaugural race at the U.S. Naval Academy
By: Ron Knabenbauer
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Denver Pioneers women's triathlon team gets set for its second race in as many weekends on Sunday as the squad will compete in the Navy Collegiate Cup on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Academy.
Â
Originally set to be a standard sprint triathlon distance, organizers made the decision late in the week to change the format to a duathlon due to water conditions in College Creek and Severn River. The race will begin with a 2.5-kilometer run instead of the usual 750-meter swim.
Â
This will be the first duathlon in DU program history.
Â
The Pioneers competed in their first full sprint of the season last Sunday at the Desert's Edge Collegiate Cup near Grand Junction, Colorado. The team finished fourth in the race that featured some of the best western programs, with sophomore Lucrezia Gowdy being the top finisher in 17th.
Â
Gowdy won't race this week, along with fellow classmates Mia Stanley-Hunt and Jenna Topott and senior captain Maira Carreau.
Â
Denver's projected race lineup for Navy is graduate student Coco Reed, junior Rebecca Nolan, sophomore Olivia Wimberger and freshmen Lucy Eggleston and Samantha Perry.
Â
The course was going to be an in-water start with a one-lap swim in College Creek, but will now begin with a one-lap, 2.5K run on the initial run course near the athletic facilities just off Severn River. The bike split features four laps totaling 19 kilometers and will go along the road on the water's edge near the athletic fields and river. The run at the end will follow the same route as the start but will be two laps to total five kilometers.
Â
Weather conditions at the 8:10 a.m. ET start on Sunday are expected to be cloudy with a chance of rain and temperatures in the 60s.
