Seven DU Hockey Newcomers Named to Academic All-Conference Team

Each player also earned honors as an NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete

DENVER – The University of Denver hockey team had seven players added to the NCHC's 2024-25 Academic All-Conference Team on Monday, with each skater also earning recognition as an NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete.

Freshmen Hagen Burrows, Jake Fisher, Tory Pitner, James Reeder and Alec Whipple and 2024-25 transfer students Eric Pohlkamp and Samu Salminen were the Pioneers' additions to the Academic All-Conference Team and Distinguished Scholar-Athlete list by the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

Counting the initial announcement of returning players in February, DU now has a total of 22 student-athletes on the All-Academic Team and its 20 players as Distinguished Scholar-Athletes are the second-most in the conference.

The 15 returning players that were recognized with the earlier list were Kent Anderson, Cale Ashcroft, Boston Buckberger, Connor Caponi, Kieran Cebrian, Matt Davis, Jack Devine, Freddie Halyk, Sam Harris, Carter King, Rieger Lorenz, Aidan Thompson and Jared Wright.

Freshmen and first-year transfers were not eligible when the honors were first announced in late February, as they had not completed a full academic year.

To be eligible for the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average or better, while having completed at least one full academic year at their current institution. Student-athletes that have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or better are honored as NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athletes, in addition to Academic All-Conference. Athletic success and playing time were not criteria for these awards.

Anderson, Buckberger, Caponi, Davis, Devine, Harris, King, Pitner and Reeder also earned national honors earlier this month as All-American Scholars from the American Hockey Coaches Association.

As a team, DU hockey finished the 2024-25 academic year with a 3.67 cumulative grade-point average.

Overall, the NCHC added 91 newcomers to its 2024-25 Academic All-Conference Team for 222 total student-athletes named to the list. The league had 68 freshmen and first-year transfers earn Distinguished Scholar-Athlete accolades, which brought that total to 159. Both totals are the most in conference history.
