Pioneers Head to Steamboat to Wrap Up CU Invitational

Denver skiing set for Nordic events at Howelsen Hill
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – The Denver Pioneers ski team heads to Howelsen Hill Ski Area this weekend for the Nordic races of the 2026 Spencer James Nelson Colorado Invitational.
The two-day competition begins on Friday at 10 a.m. MT with the Nordic 20-kilometer freestyle mass start and the meet wraps up in its entirety on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. MT with the 7.5K classic interval start. Live results will be available at https://zone4.ca/event/2026/VlgG9x/.
Denver and the other squads of the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association will be taking part in Nordic races on consecutive weekends after the DU Invitational concluded with its cross-country events last Saturday and Sunday at Frisco Nordic Center.
The Pioneers finished second in their own meet but showcased a balanced performance with 10 individual top-10 finishes in the men's and women's 10K classical and 7.5K freestyle. DU was led by two freshmen that produced season-best results with Yannick Zellweger picking up his first career victory in the 7.5K skate and Synne Bollingmo reaching the podium for the first time by coming in third in the classic mass start.
Denver is currently second in the Colorado Invitational after the alpine races were held on Jan. 13-15 at Loveland Ski Area and Aspen Highlights. The Pios have registered 347 points at the meet's halfway point and trail leader and host CU by only nine points going into the Nordic competition.
DU is returning to Howelsen Hill for the first time in nearly two years, as the team's last visit to Steamboat came at the 2024 NCAA Championships when it finished third as a squad.
