No. 18 Denver Gymnastics Travels to Arizona State on Saturday

DU makes first trip to ASU since 1999 to continue Big 12 Conference competition

WHO: No. 18 Denver at Arizona State
WHAT: Denver's second Big 12 road meet
WHERE: Desert Financial Arena (Tempe, Arizona)
WHEN: Saturday, February 7, at 2 p.m. MT

LAST TIME OUT:
Denver returned home after two meets on the road to host Iowa State in a nationally-televised meet on February 1, earning a 196.525-192.550 win. DU finished the meet with its strongest single-event score of the season so far with its 49.500 on floor while also setting another season high on bars (49.150).

Four different DU gymnasts captured event titles in the meet: senior Cecilia Cooley in the all-around with a new personal best of 39.400; fellow senior Kiley Rorich on bars; and freshmen Shyla Bhatia and Megan Aamold on vault and beam, respectively.

EYE ON THE RANKINGS:
Denver improved its season average to take the No. 18 spot in the Road to Nationals Week 5 rankings. On floor, the team returned to the top 10 nationally, coming in at No. 8 after increasing its season average by nearly three quarters of a tenth. DU is also ranked in the top 25 on beam and vault, and is just barely outside the rankings on bars.

Cooley also remains in the top 10 of the floor individual rankings, tying for No. 9 this week after earning her third score above 9.900 through the team's first four meets.

QUICK HITS:
  • Aamold was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week after winning her first collegiate event title, doing so on beam with a new personal best of 9.875 against Iowa State.
    • She joins Bhatia as DU gymnasts who have earned the Big 12's weekly newcomer nod this season.
  • With its performance against Iowa State on February 1, Denver improved its season averages for its overall team score by nearly a tenth, on floor by nearly three-quarters of a tenth and on bars by nearly a half tenth.
  • Cooley is the sixth DU gymnast to be ranked in the top 10 nationally on floor following the team's first four weeks of competition, joining Lynnzee Brown (2020), Nina McGee (2015, 2016), Sasha Sullivan (2007), and Michelle Kasuga and Emily Bankhead (both in 2003).
  • All 14 of Denver's gymnasts have competed in at least one full lineup for DU this season, and each of them have made a collegiate debut on at least one event.
SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS:
Arizona State wrapped up the first month of the season with a 194.925 in a second-place finish at Utah on January 30. Kimberly Smith placed second overall in the all-around and added a tie for second on bars with teammate Reese Grolla. Smith owns the team's highest average so far on vault, bars and floor while Isabella Kowan leads the team on beam.

Denver is 14-13 all-time against Arizona State including two wins a season ago, most recently at the Big 12 Championship where DU was third overall (196.400) and ASU was fourth (195.975). DU also won their 2025 regular-season meeting, 196.700-195.575 on March 9 in Denver.

DU has only competed in Tempe four times previously and has not made the trip to ASU since 1999.
