No. 63 DU Women’s Tennis Defeats North Dakota on Senior Saturday

Denver moves to 5-0 in Summit League play with 6-1 win on Saturday afternoon

DENVER – The No. 63-ranked University of Denver women's tennis team (13-7, 5-0 Summit) scored a 6-1 win against North Dakota to send its seniors out in style with the team's final match at Denver Tennis Park for the season on Saturday.

With a fourth consecutive doubles point won, Denver added wins in the first three singles matches to wrap up, clinching the dual up, 3-0. North Dakota got on the board at No. 6 singles before DU finished off the final two matches to secure the 6-1 victory.

Doubles:
DU clinched the doubles point with wins in the Nos. 2 and 3 spots, each finishing within a couple minutes of one another. Senior Zoe Adkins and sophomore Natálie Cinková grabbed the first win, breaking in the opening game before taking a 3-1 lead. UND's Giupponi/Roberts got within a game midway through, but Denver team held on and ultimately broke once more in what would be the final game at 6-3.

About two minutes later, seniors Claudia Martinez de Velasco and Louise Wikander clinched the point with their own 6-3 win and also doing so by breaking in the ninth and final game. The first six games all went to the serving team before the DU duo claimed the first break for a 4-3 lead.

After a discussion between the coaches and officials, the top doubles match was allowed to complete its final game, seeing UND's Schulte/Li hold serve to secure the 6-4 win, though the doubles point had already gone to Denver.

Singles:
Wikander kicked off singles play with just a single game dropped in the No. 1 slot, winning 6-1 6-0 for her third consecutive straight-sets win, all three coming with three or fewer games lost. In the first set, she won the first three gams and then added a second break for a 5-1 lead on her way to that 6-1 win. Ultimately, she won the final nine games of the match – the last three of the first set before taking all six games needed in the second.

Cinková won her team-best 26th overall singles match and her 15th in dual match play, losing three or fewer games for the second time in her last three matches – all coming at the No. 3 court. She used back-to-back breaks early in the first set to lead 4-1 before closing it out at 6-2. She also broke in the first game of the second set, her first of what would be three breaks in the set on her way to a 6-1 win.

Cai clinched the dual for Denver – her fifth such time doing so this year – using two 6-1 sets to do so while playing at No. 5 singles for the second time in the last three matches. The freshman is now undefeated in her last 10 matches, claiming nine wins, eight of which ended in two sets. She won the match's first five games and also started the second set with a four-game win streak.

UND's Emma Roberts got her team on the board after winning at the No. 6 position, but senior Marley Lambert put Denver back in the win column with her straight-sets win – her 15th overall singles win of the season. In the first set, she went up a double-break lead at 4-1 but had one break taken back in the sixth game. She answered back with the set's third consecutive break, reclaiming her two-break advantage and going on to serve it out, 6-2. UND's Jule Schulte broke late in the second set and tried to serve it out up 5-3, but Lambert broke right back with the first of two straight breaks as she went on to close it out at 7-5.

Fellow senior Adkins secured the day's final point for Denver, winning back-to-back singles matches from the No. 4 spot. Both of her sets ended in 6-4 scorelines, starting with her exchanging breaks early in the first set before going up a break for the first time at 5-4 and serving it out in the next game. She carried that momentum into the second set, breaking in the opening game and stretching it to a double-break advantage at 4-1. UND's Alva Norberg got one break back, but Adkins held on to take the set and the match.
