Womens Soccer Wins Double Overtime Thriller, 4-3

Box Score

DENVER (Sept. 19) The University of Denver women's soccer team, after getting badly beaten in the first half of their match with Air Force Tuesday, made an improbable comeback from three goals down and beat the Falcons in double overtime, 4-3 at Pioneer Field. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 4-2-2. Air Force drops to 1-5-1 with the loss.

Tuesday's match was definitely a tale of two halves as Air Force thoroughly dominated the first 45 minutes of action, taking a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Becky Wyffels into halftime. The Falcons then came out just 3:34 into the second half to take a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 lead when Beth Boyer found the back of the net. But Denver stormed back, getting a goal from freshman Jenni Harris (Littleton, Colo.) to cut the lead to 3-1 in the 63rd minute.

The Pioneers would tie the game quickly, getting two goals in less than two minutes when freshman Jamie Norwood (Littleton, Colo.) cut the lead to 3-2 and junior Leslie Montgomery (Lakewood, Colo.) tied the score on a perfect pass from teammate Carrie Ellis (Denver, Colo.) just 1:33 later.

After both teams failed to score through the remainder of regulation and the first overtime, Denver got the break they needed when they were awarded a corner kick in the 115th minute. Norwood centered the pass to the middle of the penalty box and sophomore Kerri Weaver (Littleton, Colo.) put it past Falcon goalkeeper Kristy Kuhlman for the gamewinner and an improbable, 4-3 Denver victory.

Denver head coach Jeff Hooker was pleased his team didn't give up after falling behind, 3-0. "I think they kicked our tails in the first half and were twice as good as we were," he said. "But the girls never gave up and it is a great feeling to know that a team this young has that much heart to stay in the game and pull it out in the end."

The Pioneers are next in action this Friday, Sept. 22 when they host St. Mary's (Calif.) at 4:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
