CHESTNUTT HILL, Mass. - Junior Dominique Cook (Morrison, Colo.) and freshman Noemi Hites (Pleasonton, Calif.) each tallied two goals but it wasn't enough as the University of Denver women's lacrosse team was defeated by Boston College, 16-6 on Friday afternoon (April 20) in Massachusetts. The loss drops Denver to 1-9 on the season, BC improves to 4-9.
The game began with a slow start, until Boston College attacker Lauren Miller opened the scoring at 23:25. The Pioneers responded with a goal less than six minutes later when senior Carly Rixham ( Annapolis, Md.) put the ball into the back of the net to pull Denver to within one goal, 2-1 at 17:40. Cook tied the game with her first goal of the afternoon at 15:21, but the tie was short-lived as the Eagles went a 12-0 scoring run in the remaining 15 minutes of the first half to take a 14-2 lead into the locker room.
The second half began with both teams playing strong defense. Denver freshman Katie Smith (Lexington, Mass.) put Denver on the board first in the second half with a goal at 14:43 and was followed by Hites who scored at 9:25 to cut the deficit to 15-4. Boston College added one goal late in the game and the Pioneers rallied for two goals in the final four minutes of play, but fell short when the final horn sounded.
The Denver women's lacrosse team returns to action on Monday, April 23 for its second game of a three-game road trip when they battle Stonehill College. Face-off is slated for 2 p.m. MST.
