The University of Denver women's tennis team defeated Wichita State, 5-2, Saturday (Jan. 26) in Lincoln, Neb.
Denver opened the match earning the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. Denver's tandem of freshmen Barbara Kourim and Yanick Dullens defeated Wichita State's pair of Amanda Cervantes and Annelie van der Heever, 8-4, on the first court. At No. 3 doubles, freshmen Elizabeth Matthews and Stephanie Ginsburg topped Charise Stein and Natalia Guzman, 8-1, to earn the match's first point.
On the singles court, Denver picked up wins at No. 2, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 to win the match. At No. 2 singles Dullens defeated van der Heever in straight sets. Matthews picked up a win at No. 4, topping Sarah Beth Dangos, 7-6, 3-6 (10-7). On the fifth court, Pioneer junior Rossi Thomas defeated Stein, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. And, at No. 6 singles, junior Maru Altamirano topped Laura Geen, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5, giving Denver a 5-2 victory.
The Pioneers (1-1) will remain in Lincoln to take on the University of Nebraska, Sunday.
